Chapter 5
by RathTraveller
Is Jason ready for dinner?
Definitely - he's a growing boy.
A well timed rumble from Jason's stomach made them both laugh.
"I'm surprised too, Uncle Tom. Did Aunt Gemima send you out after me?"
His uncle laughed, crows feet wrinkling the corners of his eyes as he did. "That she did, lad. You know how your aunt is when she thinks food might get cold before we get a chance to eat it."
They shared a laugh as they pictured the woman, greying brown hair that was usually dyed - one of the few luxuries she allowed herself - spectacles and more often than not flour on the bridge of her nose. Aunt Gemima's pies and fresh bread were one of the worst kept secrets in their small community, and more than once Jason had wondered just why she had never opened a bakery.
Smiling, he collected his tools and mounted up on his horse and rode with his Uncle back to the farmhouse.
Do Jason and Uncle Tom arrive in time for dinner?
