Chapter 6
by RathTraveller
Do Jason and Uncle Tom arrive in time for dinner?
Yes they do - just.
The welcome smell of food made Jason's stomach cramp slightly as he and Uncle Tom rode up to the farmhouse and turned aside to put their horses into the stables. Washing their hands quickly in the outdoor sink they headed inside.
"Just in time," Aunt Gemima said severely, the ghost of a smile playing on her lips. "And here was me about to give it to the dog."
"You always say that, Aunt Gemima," Jason said.
"You're always tardy," his Aunt replied. "And you shouldn't encourage him," she said, turning her attention to her husband.
"I was mending the fences, Auntie," Jason said quickly. "It was my fault, I lost track of time."
His Aunt grimaced, "Well, I suppose I can't fault you for seeing our livestock don't wander any," she said putting a plate in front of him. "Now eat up, before it gets cold."
They ate mostly in comfortable silence, making the most of the roast chicken and thick gravy, Jason going so far as to sop up what was left on his plate with a thick slice of sourdough bread.
"That was wonderful Auntie," he said with a sigh. "Just what I needed."
"Hollow legs," Uncle Tom said jokingly.
"Well..."
"We wouldn't have you any other way," Aunt Gemima said with a smile.
It's been a long day. What does Jason want to do now?
