Chapter 34 by simmaster

What, indeed?

Dark Trickster

Mind control sounds cool. If you're gonna be reliant on others, you might as well have THEM be the minions and not you. You select Dark Trickster.

The option vanishes and you feel a transformation begin. Your clothing distorts and changes all around you while you are filled with power, your mana pool growing and filling you with a sense of power.

The process ends just as abruptly as it began, and you look down at your body to see what's different.

For one, your outfit is almost unrecognizable. It's more reminiscent of a jester's outfit than a mage's, with poofy sleeves and pants, and a tunic instead of a robe. Great, you've gone from dress to skirt...

Your black gloves are also different, now extending up to your elbows and flaring out towards the ends. Your hood is gone too, replaced with a pointy hat not entirely unlike Morwyn's, coupled with a cowl which combined with the hat still hides your face just as well. Looking down at your feet you notice a new pair of shoes; knee-high black boots with pointy tips curved upwards. Lastly, your colour palette has gone from purple and black to blue and black, with a stripy pattern going on for most of your clothing.

...Overall you look fucking ridiculous. The option didn't tell you anything about this. You expected a new robe at most, not something this elaborate and... stupid. But nope, this is what you're wearing now. You're a magical jester. Great. Maybe your stats are more impressive... You pull them up to check.

Observer: Perceive through a willing target's senses, leaving your own body in a trance. You can end this effect at will.

Alright, so you've lost all but two of your spells. That's pretty shitty. On the other hand, you gained five new ones. On the OTHER other hand, they leave you more defenseless than ever. Even your dear old buffs and debuffs are gone! That means that to gain XP from assisted kills now, you have to cast Shadow Trick or one of these new spells, all of which seem less useful for actually killing someone. The fear spell might be good for that, but only if they're below the level cap.

...Hold on. This new "Observer" ability... It seems pretty useless. You can't imagine needing it for anything but spying on people in certain instances, which you don't see yourself doing much at all. But on second thought... What if it counts as a buff? What if you can just cast it on someone and reap XP from their kills? You DOUBT that's how it works, but that would be hella neat. And the restriction that it has to be a willing target leads you to believe it might work that way, since the main reason you can think of for wanting to cast it on an unwilling target would be to steal XP from them without their consent.

And if that's not what it does... you can think of two other uses for it. For one, it will allow you to "follow" Morwyn into places you can't go. Additionally... you could use it for less practical, more lewd purposes. YOU may not have a dick, but with this spell, you could enter the body of someone who does. The spell doesn't say anything about being able to control the target's body, but just being, well, an observer, would still be pretty great. Especially since you perceive through ALL their senses. It'd be like POV porn, but better!

This may not have been all you hoped for, but you see some potential here. Especially if you get better spells at higher levels. Looking over at Morwyn who is still brewing potions with her back to you, you decide to use your new abilities to play a prank on her. You ARE a trickster now, after all.

You cast Invisibility on yourself, excited to see your body turn transparent. It doesn't vanish entirely though, but maybe that's just for you. So you can still navigate your limbs without stumbling all over the place. That's pretty helpful. You then sneak over to Morwyn and cast Minor Illusion, envisioning the warrior from before. You manage to produce a decent replica, conjuring an image of him standing behind her back with a scowl on his face. You then let out a fake scream, as if you just noticed him.

Morwyn turns around just as you hoped and stumbles back in surprise when she sees the illusion you put behind her.

"The fuck are you still doing here, asshole?" she scolds and conjures a fireball in her hand, throwing it at him and watching it pass right through. At that point you can't hold it in anymore and you laugh heartily, making the illusion vanish with a flicker as the invisibility wears off and she can plainly see you standing nearby.

"Who are you?" Morwyn demands to know, standing back up and looking around briefly before glaring at you. "And where's my caster boy?"

"...Wait, you don't recognize me?" you say, realizing you might want to calm her down before she tries to kill you. "I mean... that's fair, I guess I changed quite a bit just now."

She raises an eyebrow. "Tiny?"

That name still does not sit well with you.

"What happened to your clothes?"

"I leveled up," you explain. "Enough to get a class upgrade, apparently. So I'm not a caster anymore. I'm a trickster. A Dark Trickster."

"Aaand this is something you... consented to? You're wearing that stuff willingly?"

You turn your eyes down, self-conscious about your looks again. "Uh... I chose the class myself, yeah. I did not expect the outfit."

"I see... For a moment there I thought you were a different monster entirely. Even your eyes are different."

"Wait, they are?"

"Yeah. They're blue. Like half of your dumb-looking getup."

"There's no reason to be mean about it!" you mutter in dismay. "I know I look stupid, you don't have to rub it in..."

"I'm gonna, though. You spooked me, so I'm entitled to a bit of teasing," Morwyn responds with a smirk.

"Fiiine... Anyway, do you still want me around now that I'm... this? My spell arsenal is pretty much completely different now. I might not be useful to you anymore."

She shrugs. "If that's your request to go off on your own, go ahead. I never took you with me because I expected you to be that useful, it was more for fun. So I'm still down if you wanna tag along for a bit longer."

...Wait. She was letting you go? Just like that? No punishment for your lacking loyalty? Weird... Question is, would you be better off on your own at this point, or is it still better to stay with her? You do have some stronger monster-control abilities now, so maybe you could make a career out of finding a group of monsters and convincing them to be your buddies. On the other hand, Morwyn is still a hero, so she's probably the best buddy you're gonna get right now. She's also surprisingly nice to you...

What's your choice?
