Cut your losses.
"Damn. I can't lose my job, especially not from something like this. I'll never work again," he mutters quietly.
He turns slightly and tries to explain. "I was just grabbing something--"
"You were flirting, weren't you?" the lifeguard asks. She eyes him up and down. "Oh my gosh. You even have a..."
"No, no. It isn't like that," he replies.
You step in. "I was actually just saying hello in passing. I think he was just leaving to grab something? I don't know. Is it so wrong to say a quick greeting to someone I know?"
"Oh." She ponders. "I didn't know you knew Chris. Is that really it?"
"Yeah. I wouldn't want to bug him on-shift."
They look among each other. "Sorry about that. Hey, Chris. Speaking of which. I need help with something."
Chris looks to you apologetically. You smile and wave your hand. "We'll meet up another time," you say.
Well that was a bust, but the day isn't lost. Let's go relax in the tubs.
