Court is uneventful.

Despite arriving a little late, your first day of holding court goes by mostly in a blur of tedious and unimportant formalities. Only two things really stand out to you.

The first is that, one moon from now, the Valley Contests will taking place is the northern hills of Beatha. The Contests were a series of ostensibly friendly games between Itheria and Beatha. Feats of strength and skill, wrestling and mock combat and the like. The Contests were taken seriously by everyone in both kingdoms. In fact, Beatha's crown prince Donald and his younger sister Kara would be in attendance. It was expected you would also attend, not just to cheer on your kingdom's athletes but to meet and learn the mettle of the man who'd soon be one of your biggest rivals.

Second, Lady Alanna Florence had returned from her trip around the continent. Your mother had appointed the leggy blonde mage to the post of Court Mage shortly after Lady Vessa's tragic and unexplained "disappearance".

Renowned as a great beauty as well as a magical scholar, Lady Alanna had nonetheless remained unaware of your mother's secret. In fact, many attributed the former regent's almost total lack of visible ageing to Lady Alanna's know-how and bizarre concoctions. After a few more trivial matters, court was ended for the day. Courtiers and staff filed out of the Throne Room to attend their business, and soon it was just you and your mother.

"It's just... sacred. Or someone could walk in on us!" You stammer. Your mother had locked the door to the main hall, but it's not like she held the only key.

"A king should be fearless." Your mother goads. "Or would the little cripple rather hide in his chamber fucking paid girls?"
