Collect your thoughts first

You are not sure what is going on. At first, you think Melody is trying to get her ice cream back, but when her tongue discovers that it is gone, she does not withdraw it. So, it can’t be that. She continues to swirl her tongue around your mouth for a few seconds before withdrawing it.

“What’s wrong?” She asks nervously.

“I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on.” You tell her.

“We’re kissing silly. You know, my tongue in your mouth, your tongue in mine. Kids have been doing it for fun for thousands of years. Adults use it as a sign of love. Or as a prelude to sex.” Melody gives you a wink after her last comment.

You are floored. A short while ago, Melody has crying her head off about having her heart ripped out of her chest. Now, she’s acting like the whole past year with Keith never happened. In fact, she is coming on to you.

“I don’t think this is a good idea.” You don’t mean to let her down, but she’s not thinking clearly.

“But you kissed me first.” She says as tears begin to well up in her eyes.

“Sweetie, I didn’t kiss you. I was trying to get my ice cream. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to kiss you, but…” Melody cuts you off before you can finish.

“I’m just not pretty enough for you.” She says as she begins to sob again.

“That’s not true. You are very pretty.” You try to rebuild her self-esteem.

“No, it’s okay. You can say it Jack. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve heard it twice in one night.” Melody confesses as she continues to cry.

“Hey. I think you are very beautiful. The reason I’m not kissing you back has nothing to do with how you look. If Keith hadn’t ripped your guts out tonight, I’d’ve been all into kissing you a moment ago. In fact, I’ve wanted to kiss you for years. It’s just that we’ve never both been single at the same time. Until now.” It is with your last sentence that light bulbs start going your head. You look down at the ice cream bowl, take it and place it on the table by Melody’s bed.

She is puzzled by your actions, but it becomes clear to her when you gently lift her up onto your lap and begin to massage her cheek. She looks down into your eyes and begins to breathe erratically as you reach up to kiss her.
