Chapter Four: Consent in Silence

Ranjith gave his answer calmly.

The elders on both sides received it with visible relief. Smiles surfaced. Phone calls were made. Dates were tentatively discussed. What had once been uncertain now felt inevitable.

He watched it unfold from a distance, saying little, letting others celebrate the decision he had already made days ago.

His phone vibrated again.

Missed calls.

One after another.

Athulya.

He let them ring.

Only when the screen filled with a message did he unlock it.

What the fuck is going on?

Why are marriage talks happening without asking me?

Ranjith read it slowly. Then another came.

You said you would handle things.

He waited. Let the panic steep.

Finally, he replied.

Let’s meet. We shouldn’t discuss this over messages.

She agreed almost immediately.

They met later that evening, away from crowds—an open stretch of land where trees grew loosely and the air smelled of earth and dusk. Semi-private. Safe enough to talk. Dangerous enough to feel exposed.

Athulya didn’t wait.

“What were you thinking?” she demanded, the moment she saw him. “How could you say yes without even asking me?”

Ranjith stood still, letting her words hit him. He watched the rise and fall of her chest, the flush in her face. Anger suited her. It made her vivid.

“I didn’t do it without thinking,” he said evenly.

“That’s not an answer.”

He stepped closer, lowering his voice.

“I did it because I was thinking of you.”

She scoffed. “That’s convenient.”

“Is it?” he asked softly. “Tell me—what exactly were you expecting after what happened?”

The mention of what happened shifted something in her. Her voice faltered just slightly.

“He didn’t even come,” she said. “No call. Nothing.”

“I know,” Ranjith replied. “And I saw what it did to you.”

She looked at him then, really looked.

“I didn’t want you to be alone in that,” he continued. “I didn’t want your family questioning you, suspecting you, controlling you even more.”

“So you decided for me?” she asked.

“I chose stability,” he said. “For you.”

He let the silence stretch, then added carefully, “If Aakash ever comes back—if he ever explains himself—I’ll be the only one who can help you. No husband would tolerate that. I would.”

That made her pause.

“You’d help me… even then?”

“Yes,” he said without hesitation. “Because I understand you. Because I don’t want to cage you. I want to protect you.”

Her anger dulled, replaced by confusion. Doubt. Something softer.

She wasn’t convinced—but she wasn’t walking away either.

“I need time,” she said finally.

“Take it,” Ranjith replied. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She left without another word.

Ranjith stayed back, watching her disappear into the fading light.

He felt it then—the quiet, unmistakable thrill. Not lust in its crude form, but something deeper. The satisfaction of influence. The warmth of knowing he was inside her thoughts now, shaping them.

Once the marriage happened, there would be no confusion.

No Aakash.

No alternatives.

She would be his. Completely.

And she would believe it was what she wanted.

Ranjith smiled and turned away, already imagining how easily she would settle into the life he had chosen for her.
