Babysitting outing is cancelled so she goes shopping
Chloe stepped out into the warm Saturday sunshine, her yellow tank top catching the light as she walked toward her car. The distressed denim shorts hugged her toned legs, and she felt a little bounce in her step, already picturing Mark’s excited face when she arrived. Her phone buzzed in her bag just as she slid into the driver’s seat. She fished it out, expecting a quick confirmation from Mrs. Jefferson or maybe a sweet reply from Josh.
Instead, it was Mrs. Jefferson again. Chloe answered with a bright, “Hello!”
“Oh, Chloe, I’m so sorry,” Mrs. Jefferson said, sounding genuinely apologetic. “The meeting got pushed back, and my sister just offered to take Mark for the day. She’s already on her way. I should have called sooner. I feel terrible for getting your hopes up.”
Chloe’s shoulders dropped slightly, but she kept her voice cheerful. “That’s okay, really! Family time is important. Tell Mark I said hi and that we’ll have that park day soon.”
She hung up and sat for a moment in the quiet car, staring at her reflection in the rearview mirror. Her long blonde hair cascaded over one shoulder, and the bright yellow top made her blue eyes pop. A small pout formed on her full lips. The day had suddenly opened up like an unexpected gift. No babysitting, no immediate study session with Lily, and Josh was busy until later. Freedom.
A smile slowly replaced the pout. “Shopping it is,” she whispered to herself, already imagining the cool air-conditioned mall and the chance to browse without any schedule pressing on her.
Twenty minutes later, Chloe pulled into the bustling mall parking lot. She adjusted her top in the visor mirror, tugging it just a little lower because it felt fun and flirty today. The fabric clung nicely to her curves, and she felt pretty—confident, even. As she walked through the automatic doors, the scent of pretzels and perfume hit her, and she let out a happy sigh.
First stop: the big department store on the ground floor. Chloe wandered through the women’s section, running her fingers over soft fabrics and cute summer dresses. She picked up a floral sundress in soft pastels and held it against herself in front of a mirror. The hem would hit mid-thigh, and the neckline was sweetly modest but still flattering. She imagined wearing it on a date with Josh.
“Excuse me,” a helpful sales associate said, a young woman with a name tag reading “Sara.” “That looks perfect on you. Would you like to try it on?”
Chloe blushed lightly. “Oh, um, sure! Why not?”
In the fitting room, she slipped out of her tank top and shorts, admiring her reflection for a moment. Her body was toned from regular yoga and walks with Josh, and her skin glowed from the summer sun. The sundress slid on easily, hugging her waist and flaring out. She twirled once, giggling at how the skirt lifted. It was adorable. She took a quick mirror selfie and sent it to Lily with the caption: “Emergency solo shopping day! Thoughts?”
Lily replied almost instantly: “HOT. Buy it. Also, why no babysitting? Spill later.”
Chloe smiled and changed back into her original outfit, deciding to buy the dress. As she paid, she felt a little thrill of independence. She rarely treated herself like this.
Next, she wandered into a lingerie boutique, drawn by the pretty window displays. The store was quiet, with soft lighting and delicate lace everywhere. Chloe browsed the racks, her cheeks warming as she picked up a pale pink bra and panty set with tiny bows. It was sweet and innocent-looking, just her style. She thought about how Josh’s eyes might light up if she surprised him later.
“Finding everything okay?” a smooth male voice asked. The store employee was tall and friendly, probably in his mid-twenties, with neat hair and a warm smile.
Chloe startled slightly, nearly dropping the hanger. “Oh! Yes, thank you. Just… looking.” Her naivety made her voice come out softer than intended, almost embarrassed.
He nodded politely. “Let me know if you want to try anything on. We have great fitting rooms in the back.”
She thanked him and quickly moved to another section, heart beating a little faster. Even innocent interactions sometimes left her feeling flustered. She ended up buying the pink set, tucking the bag into her larger shopping bag with a secret smile. As the afternoon wore on, Chloe’s bags grew heavier, but her heart felt lighter. She had the new dress, lingerie, and a couple of small gifts she’d picked up for Josh and Mark. The cancelled babysitting had turned into a perfect day of self-care.
She walked out of the mall carrying her bags.
