Chapter 43
by
Groffin
Take Kreasa to the city?
At least try to travel with her
You heave a deep sigh and swipe a hand through your hair before deciding to relent. "Alright. Get her dressed and on a saddle."
Xallia grins giddily and squeezes her thrall in delight. "Oh, thank you Sabine. I promise this will lead to good things."!To that you merely snort and direct everyone to pick up their things.
Anya pulls out a spare set of undergarments out of her pack for Kreasa, who is fiddling uncertainly with her cast-off armor. A breastplate, an open-faced helmet, and a set of faulds, all dull and dented, clearly scavenged from a human soldier. You and Glenda finish hanging up the bags on the horses saddles and the elf trots over to help Anya get the lizard girl dressed. They try to engage conversation, but the transformed creature has an extremely rudimentary grasp of language.
Despite confusion, Kreasa is once more iron-clad in short order, her armor clearly hanging heavily on her shrunken frame. She mutters a hesitant thank-you as she picks up her beaten-looking scimitar and tucks it into her belt.
You nod and tug her by an arm to your steed. A quick bout of pantomiming is all you need to get her to clamber onto the horse's back. Finally, you pull yourself up in front of her and watch Anya and Glenda get situated as well. All that's left is to get Xallia moving.
"You ready Xallia?" You call back, turning j your seat to check on the succubus.
"Yeah, in a heartbeat." The demoness replies, before lowers her head and starts chanting something unintelligible. She sway where she stands for a moment, then, with a rustle of wind and a small hop, she's suddenly aloft a foot off the ground, surrounded by a haze of magic.
"Okay, let's go!" And like that, Xallia takes off like a stone from a sling. You face forward again and spur your steed after her, hearing Anya do the same beside you. It's good to be back on track, and you're determined not to stop again until you reach Grelangan.
You ride hard for hours along the long and rocky trail around the mountain's feet as the sun above you completes its arch and begins to dip toward the horizon. The horse never falter their strides, though the breath comes in ragged wheezes. Xallia is overtaken by your party's steeds in short order, but she makes a valiant effort to keep up regardless. You look behind yourself periodically to track her; she doesn't fall too far behind, but the distance grows a bit each time you check, and as the light dims you see your demonic lover wobbling in the air. Kreasa is anxious behind you, mumbling to herself in what you assume to be the lizardfolk language, and clutching you hard and burying her face in your nape whenever she stumbles on a word human mouths weren't built to pronounce.
Finally, just as the sun is setting, the path finally reaches the far side of the mountain and turns outward, where you can see a large valley that opens to the coastlines. There, at the juncture of river and sea, is the sprawling, layered structure of the city of Grelangen.
You pull up sharply, taking in the sight. After days of fear and stress and rough travel, finally you have reached your destination. Somewhere down there is the Grand Abbey, and once you get in, you'll find the Mother Superior, explain what happened at White Cliff, and the nightmare will be vanquished at last. But that won't happen until you get down there.
Just as you're about to begin the run of the final stretch, you here Xallia calling out behind you.
"Wait, please! I can't go any farther, I need energy!" The succubus cries, sinking out of the air and stumbling a halt beside you. You look at her, taking in her pinched face and shaking limbs. Before you can think of how to respond, you her a clink, and look up to see Anya and Glenda slipping off their mount, bow-legged and wincing. Their horse itself is gasping desperately for air, and you are suddenly aware of your own mount's heaving sides, Kreasa's whimpers, and finally the ache in your limbs. Your entire party is exhausted, drained, and at their limits. But your goal is in plain sight.
Could you make it without disaster if you put them back on their feet right now? Should you do the prudent thing and give them a rest. For how long would you be willing to delay if so?
Begin riding again immediately, rest until everyone gets their wind back, your stop fully for the night?
