Chapter 5

Is she up to the task?
As it turns out, yes
Tora did a circuit of the ship, check out the exterior damage. "Looks like you'll have to replace a few sections of armor plating here, here, and there. That's shipyard work. Won't know till I see the internal structure where that'll need replacing, too. Engines don't look too bad. Alright, open her up and let's see if this scrapheap's salvagable."
Normally the Outlander would be a bit riled at someone insulting his ship like that, but Tora had spoken of an advanced alien alien frigate the same way, so he knew it was just her way. He opened the hatch and helped Tora carry her tools up the ramp.
"I'm probably gonna need some help, so you go take off that bulky armor. I don't wanna have to cut you free of an access port when I should be rewiring a power conduit," Tora said.
The Outlander laughed. "So this was all a ploy to get me undressed?" he said, not seriously.
"You'll know when I want you to get undressed," Tora snapped back, not even looking up from the console she was examining. "Now go, chop chop."
The Outlander shrugged. It was easier to do what she said than try and find a replacement mechanic with her level of skill. He went up to his personal arms locker and stepped into the armor harness. Robotic limbs clamped down onto various catches on his combat armor, and once it was ready, they removed the armor much more easily than another person could have done. It would have taken 20 minutes to do it by himself. Underneath he wore a dark grey bodysuit made of tear-proof, temperature resistant material that helped wick the moisture off his skin while wearing heavy armor, keeping him from overheating. He put on durable bantha-leather shoes instead of the armored boots he usually wore, and grabbed a tool belt before rejoining Tora.
She looked him over while he approached. "Huh. Never seen you without the armor before. I didn't realize how much of that was you and not the gear," she said. She wasn't wrong - the Outlander was heavily built, broad-bodied and thick. To a lot of people, he probably looked fat. But it was a power-lifter's bulk, not lard, across his hefty frame. He could lift easily double his 135 kilos of weight, and in a bar brawl, had been known to lift and toss an opponent one-handed. "Anyway, let's get to work, Hulk. Looks like you've made a lot of upgrades. Durasteel armor, laser cannons, proton torpedo launchers, concussion missiles with extra magazines, electromagnetic pulse generator, electronic warfare pod. I'm kind of surprised anything works right with all that going on. Alright, time to get dirty."
For the next several hours they worked on his ship together, stripping damaged wiring, inspecting parts, replacing what they could and making notes on what they'd need to order. Some of the work spaces were pretty tight, and their bodies wound up pressed together rather frequently. Finally, they'd gotten to the last item on the list. "When your generator went out, it looks like the turbine shaft got welded to the bearings, here. Now, we could cut it, but then we'd have to replace the shaft, bearing, and turbine entirely. Get my hammer. I want you to try hitting it hard enough to pop it free. That way we only have to replace the bearings," Tora explained.
The Outlander picked up the heavy durasteel hammer, lined up the head with where Tora told him to hit it, raised it, and swung with a resounding clunk of dense metal hitting dense metal. Tora looked where he hit, and shook her head. "Stop treating it like your sweetheart and hit it!" she barked. He swung again, and this time the clunk was followed by a soft pop, and when Tora pushed the turbine, it was able to move freely. "Nice work, big guy." She lit up a cigarette while he put the hammer back, and leaned against a bulkhead. She raised her arms over her head, causing her breasts to stand out against her tight sleeveless t-shirt and bare an inch or two of skin below her navel.
She caught his look and smiled. "You know what's better than fixing a good ship?" She flicked aside the cigarette, and unbuttoning her pants. "Fixing a good ship, and getting fucked."
She's got a point
