Arriving in Hispaniola

The rest of the trip has been somewhere between miserable and insufferable. For weeks you have been stuck on a small, wobbly boat, surrounded by nothing but endless ocean, with little to do for entertainment besides fishing or gambling with the crew. Thankfully, neither pirates nor storms threatened your trip, but in the future you may not have such luck. You were ecstatic when the watchman finally announced that Hispaniola was in sight, and you eagerly awaited reaching the port. The island is lushly green, with sparse signs of human habitation from sea except for Santo Domingo. You have heard that there at least were a great many Indians on the island, though few lived on the coast for fear of raiders. Your own people do not fear such, at least not the poorly-armed savages the natives hid from. Visible is a low wall and small fortress, comprising most of the defenses of the settlement.

As the ship docks, you note that the settlement itself is fairly small, as to be expected of a recent colonial venture, though it is the oldest in existence. A small crowd of onlookers has gathered to see what has arrived on the new boat. The merchants, once docked, begin to unload their cargo. You pay the captain the rest of your fee and disembark. As you walk down the gangplank, you notice that someone in the crowd seems to be looking at you. He is a decently-dressed older man, somewhere between his fifties and sixties, with dark gray hair. A few steps further, and you're sure he's looking at you. He raises a hand to wave dumbly at you. "Hola Senor, welcome to Hispaniola!"

You wave back slowly to the strange man. He awaits you anxiously on the wood dock. Reaching the end of the gangplank only seems to further excite him. "And you are?" you asks skeptically. He bows deeply. "My name is Sancho, I am an assistant of the governor. We heard that a caballero would be arriving, so he sent me to greet you and bring you to him, at your own leisure, of course." You nod. "I am Alfsono Delgado. I am considering settling here, and would be happy to speak to the governor about my options." Sancho nearly claps his hands in excitement. "Excellent, excellent! Would you care to go to him directly, or would you prefer to be left on your own? Or, I could give you a tour of the settlement. Anything you desire, Senor."
