Another Hook Shot

You were only a couple steps from where you had taken your last shot, You were bound and determined to eliminate that failure from everyone’s minds. You turned sideways to the basket. With the ball in your right hand, you swung it out and up. The ball flew upwards in an arc towards the basket.

It flew over the rim. It flew over the backboard. It was probably still higher than the rim when it hit the wall beyond the end line. It bounced off the wall. It landed in the bench area and bounced out. It had rolled out almost to the half court line by the time Tom tracked it down.

He launched it from mid-court. It hit the front of the rim and bounced up and away. Shannon was about halfway between the mid-court stripe and top of the key when she caught ti. Like Tom, she shot the ball from where she had caught it, Like Tom, she hit the rim and had it bounce away. Larry caught it at the free throw line, He dribbled to the top of the key, Larry groaned as his shot bounced on the rim a couple times before dropping off.

“You do it like this.” Cindy said as she stepped up next to you. The ball flew from her hand and into the basket. Marcus stepped up and made it look easy. Cindy grabbed the ball from the bottom of the net and bounced it to you.

Nervously you dribbled the ball and looked at the basket. You had already missed this shot twice and missed it badly. You had no confidence that you could make it this time. Nervously you wiped your palms on your skirt. Cindy began to chant “O!-O!-O!” That only made you more nervous; especially when Larry joined in.

You wiped your sweaty palms a second time before launching the ball. It went up and came down...just to your right. The two of them began to chant “Take it off!” You sighed. You needed to take another piece of clothing. You turned so you could go to the bench to pay your forfeit.
