Chapter 11 by Cantalope Cantalope

How did she take the fall?

Almost miraculously well.

The numbing effects of adrenaline shock kept her still and unresponsive for long moments. For a time, she thought she was dead. Then the pain started leaking back into her body, seeming to inflate her limp body as she fought to return air to her lungs. Gasping, she lay there in a daze as her body recovered. It took a few moments longer before her mind clicked back into place and she quieted herself to listen. She could just barely make out the jagged crack she had fallen through. The faint light reflecting through seemed only to highlight how incredibly dark it was.

As lucidity returned she almost wished it didn't, the silence was incredible. Any movement at all seemed far too loud in this place beneath the earth. The complete lack of echo was unsettling and Lara had to clamp down on her rising fear before it overwhelmed her. This place wasn't just a creepy, dark catacomb: Something was down here with her. The mere thought almost paralyzed her all over again.

Maybe it was just a prank, maybe they were messing with each-other, or... what if they were trying to flush her out? Lara felt an immense surge of relief from that thought and she clung to it like a drowning rat in a storm. That was the only logical explanation, they were trying to flush her out by terrifying her. She focussed so intently on that thought so that the doubts wouldn't surface, that the sounds she heard were hard to fake...

Shakily getting to her feet in the darkness, she felt around her. She seemed to have fallen on a bench or a pedestal of some kind. It was completely cracked in half from her falling on it, she breathed a prayer of thanks that it had given way: it could have easily broken her spine as well. Despite the dampening quality of the ancient walls she felt like she was in a large room, the sound seemed to continue farther to her left.

Shuffling along the ground, careful not to fall any further, she started to get a rough idea of the room she was in. It was quite large, numerous stone pedestals lined the walls, and it seemed to be circular. Every so often she would jump as her foot crunched on a bit of pottery and she stumbled over several rockfalls. Walking around a particularly large one she almost fell as the floor dropped a few centimeters. Curiously, she felt along the floor till she found another step leading downwards. Almost like an amphitheater? As she circled the room she found several hallways stretching outwards, some even leading upwards. She was getting a fairly good idea of where she was but her brain did not like the absence of light, it made her uneasy, thinking of somehow getting lost in the dark catacombs without knowing her way back. But what was she going to use for light?

Does she descend into the amphitheater? Does she try a hallway? Can she improvise a light?
