Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a Latina Democratic congresswoman elected to represent New York's 14th congressional district in 2018, at the age of just 29. She is noted for her outspokenly progressive stances, and leadership roll in a faction of progressive congresswomen of colour dubbed, 'The Squad'.

Despite her popularity with grassroots Democrats and young people, AOC is a controversial figure among both mainstream American parties for challenging the political consensus, having championed the widely panned 'Green New Deal', called for the abolition of ICE, outspokenly criticised both Trump administration immigration policy and Democratic congressional leadership.
