Chapter 44

Well?
Actually, Charlotte said you should come and talk to her.
"Oh, that's alright!" You smile. "I actually think that Charlotte wants my help with some stuff, this time."
"REALLY?!" Penelope's eyes light up. "Wow! She normally hates working with people! I have to **** her to do team jobs, like, every time we need her to do a team job. What's your secret?"
You take a moment to think about it.
"...Well, I think she said that my boobs are first rate, so that could be it....."
Penelope leans in, smiling brightly, and baps you gently on the shoulder.
"You're really fitting in well around here, you know that Debbie? I'm glad the two of you are taking such great initiative!" Penelope beams. "Well, I won't keep you -- go see what she wants!"
"Right!" You give a stiff nod, and get up to your feet, dusting the grass from your bum.
Taking a moment to perfect your posture, you begin to march across the circle towards Charlotte. She looks up at you as you grow closer, and gives you a greeting nod, seeming a bit baffled by your march and perfect posture. It's okay, glamour and style isn't for everyone.
"Oh, hey." She says. "Is this about that-"
"This is about that thing you said you needed help with!" You confirm. "What is the thing?"
Charlotte looks around the circle, cautiously. Seeming satisfied nobody in the Courtyard seems to be looking in your direction, except for Penelope who's staring at the two of you with the most proud teary-eyed face anybody could ever have, Charlotte turns back to you.
"Alright, starting point -- what do you think the Sorority is for?"
You blink. "Pardon?"
"What do you think we do here? And why?"
You scrunch up your face and think.
"Well, it's for making friends, isn't it?"
Charlotte studies your face. Again, it's really hard to read her expression.
"Alright, I'm leaving that one for one of the boss girls to talk with you about." She says, then continues in a much quieter voice after another quick cursory glance. "{if CharlotteTalk == True}I've told you this once before, but it was a while ago, so I'll tell you again. {endif}The short of it is, we need influence and advertising to get done what we want to get done."
You nod along, to show that you get it, and also to try focus your mind into not wandering off somewhere else until she's done. Which it honestly does a little bit anyway, but for the most part you can recover and get the gist of what's up when your attention comes back.
"A lot of students spend most of their Free Time in the Arena tent.{if ArenaAccess == False} You know what that is?"
{if ArenaView = 0}Yeah, you've seen that tent in the Courtyard a few times.... you've never gone in it, though. You would assume that people fight in there, from the name.
"Go check it out." She tells you. "It's not as fun as it will be when we're doing it our way, but it's alright -- and the people in there are{else}You nod vigorously. It's fun! But you're not really allowed....
"I'll see about.... getting you permission to be inside." Charlotte says. Oh, what! Being in the Sorority is the coolest! "The people in there are{endif}{else} On top of that, that's{endif} mostly the group we want to get attention from. We've done some small influence already, but the big kicker would be if.... well, {if ArenaAccess == True}you know Nora?"
You nod.
"Yeah, I know. Little test of loyalty, sorry." She clears her throat. "We know the two of you seem friendly. Unfortunately, she's the Champion of the Arena, and.... coincidentally, a paragon of everything we don't like. Top of her class, top of the school, so serious in her study.... we need to take her down. I think you'd be helpful with that."
You freeze up. What...? Betray Nora? But.... she's so nice! And she's your cuddle buddy! What kind of a cuddle buddy would you be if you helped somebody hurt her? Your face furrows with the hard decision of which friend you should take the side of. Luckily, Charlotte sees your apprehension, and jumps in first.
"Look, don't worry about that." She says. "If she's your friend, you don't have to be a part of that. It would just be useful -- we're more after the Champion of the Arena title, and so far, it looks like she's not that interested in fighting there this year.{if TrainingNora == True}"
Ah, so she doesn't know you're trying to get her to go back to it, then. Should you tell her? Would it be like lying if you didn't mention it? Well, Charlotte's still talking, so instead of thinking about another hard decision you just let your mind forget it for now and tune back in to your Sorority friend.
"{else} {endif}If that's the case, somebody else will end up as the Champion, and they'll be the one to beat." She says. "If {else}if {endif}we can get one of our girls to be the Champion, then that'd really draw some eyes from that fighting crowd. And I'd bet they'd be willing to hear us out on what they can do to become 'stronger', too."
Ah, cool! So it's like a bit of public service for the Warrior students, then. That's awesome. But hold on a second.... your eyes widen.
"Are you asking me to become the Arena Champion?!" You ask in disbelief, even though you secretly hope she'll start telling you how she knows you can do it and that you have the potential to be stronger than anyone.
"No." She says. Aww.... "First Years aren't allowed to fight in there anymore, ever since we... heheh."
Charlotte's hand comes up to her mouth to hide a laugh.
"Sorry. Funny." She clears her throat. "No, it'd be me. But there are some things I could.... probably use your help with. Especially since nobody would ever suspect you."
"What sort of things?"
"Sabotage things." She says with a smile. "Meet me in the Arena later. I've already added myself to the fighter roster. We'll talk about how we can work together to get me up the rankings until we hit the top. Trust me -- it's gonna be fun. I've got quite a few ideas for how we could set me up with a bit of an advantage already...."
You agree to meet her there{if ArenaAccess == False} after you check it out{endif}, and she gives you a scheming smile. It's one of the few times that you can read her face, and it comes across loud and clear. Helping someone become the Arena Champion might be fun, actually.... {if TrainingNora == True}but it does make a bit of a conflict of interest with how you're trying to help Nora get back out there right now.{elseif ArenaAccess == True}so long as it doesn't have anything to do with hurting Nora, that is.{endif}
Okay, that was a lot, but you paid enough attention to get most of it, and for that you're happy! You move back to your spot next to Penelope, who gives an excited squeal and starts asking for all the details about what Charlotte wants your help with.
You have unlocked Charlotte as a trainable Arena Fighter! {if TrainingNora == True}{if TrainingGoldRush == True}(3/3){else}(2/3){endif}{elseif TrainingGoldRush == True}(2/3){else}(1/3){endif}
Pick your favourite and get them all the way to the top!
It's a lot of energy to handle, honestly. But at least it's positive energy.
