Chapter 2 by Raiga Raiga

Now that it's morning, what do you do?

A quick coffee, then head to work

Your alarm on your phone wakes you up at sunrise with a reminder that your shift starts in an hour and a half. You take a quick shower and get dressed. You walk to the kitchen and start a pot of coffee. Alex is sound asleep, but she'll enjoy having a fresh pot when she wakes up in a half hour. You fill your tumbler and make your way out the door and to the parking garage. Once you find your little four door, you get in and try to get a grasp of what's going on.

You turn the car on and idle with the radio set low for an ambient sound, knowing you still have plenty of time to get to work. You open your map app and see that you still work at the same office building, which is a relief. It's just an office job with a quarter of the floor, so it shouldn't be hard to figure out what this new position is. With that out of the way, you check your social media. A lot of familiar faces appear alongside people you've never heard of, even relatives who had wished you a happy birthday a couple months ago. You put your phone down before the anxiety builds too much and figure it's better to just try to get through the day.

You make your way to the office, most of the city feeling familiar, but different enough that you knew you didn't imagine anything last night. You can't explain it, but between the new faces and slight differences in the city, you know that this isn't quite the home you know. One striking difference is that the mid rise office building is now a terracotta color instead of navy blue and white, and the parking garage was much larger and had a valet service. You scratch your head and pull up to the valet near the garage entrance, they stop you before you're able to enter the building. A young man comes to the drivers side and you roll down the window, with a smile on his face he greets you, "Hey Parker, congrats on the promotion. Would you like the usual air freshener?"

You rub your forehead, "Uhhh, yeah. That would be great, and thank you. I think it'll be a good day myself." The young man smiles and hands you a ticket as you leave your car. You head into the office building, get onto the elevator, and head to your office's floor. The secretary is a soft-skinned guy with the nameplate "Trevor" instead of the older "Janice" you remember. He looks up at you.

"Parker welcome. You're a bit early, but I think they have your office ready." He gets up and leads you to the corner office. It had an open walkway, so it was more like a glorified cubical with a great view, which was nicer than you expected. You try to breach the topic of what you do as gently as you can.

"So, Trevor, I know it might sound strange, but what's my new position title again?"

Trevor giggled a bit, "Oh, you're funny Parker. You got promoted to administration executive for the management team, remember? I guess they liked how organized you've been in sales and decided they needed a shared secretary/assistant. At least you get a nice view and a raise." He looks at you, "Anyway, did you get your hormone screen yet?" It seemed like an abrupt personal question.

"Excuse me?" You asked a bit shocked.

Trevor looked a little unsettled, "I'm sorry, did it come back bad or something?"

You shake your head and apologize, "Uh, no. Sorry... hormone panel? What do you mean?"

"Well, uhh... your C-31 yearly? Like, you said you were going to get the blood-work done last week and they usually email your results to you unless they think you need a follow up." Trevor answered, confused by your demeanor.

You try to save face, "Oh yeah, I totally spaced going in. Thanks for reminding me, I know I gotta get that done." You chuckled.

He looked at you weird, "Right... well, the first meeting isn't for another hour or two, so I'll let you get set up in here." He smiled and went back to his desk. In the meantime, you had no clue what this hormone panel was, so you sat down in the office chair and pulled out your phone. You used a search engine to look up C-31 panel and got way too many results. One was an app icon for an encyclopedia app you apparently have on your phone. The page was pretty long, but the intro seemed to sum it up:

"C-31 is a yearly hormone panel that men get, as opposed to the C-30 panel for women, to determine their levels of testosterone, estrogen, infirmen, and fortisone." Not being familiar with the latter two terms, you looked them up and found that infirmen is a submissiveness hormone and fortisone is a dominance hormone and the levels of each vary depending on mostly your **** perception of where you fall in your social hierarchies.

You decide not to play web doctor and figure these are best discussed with your physician. In the time you have left, you book an appointment with your family doctor who, thankfully, is the doddering and kind Dr. Stefan Benson you remember. His nurse was able to fit you in after work and said they'd even be able to work in your C-31 since you hadn't been in for it. You hadn't mentioned, but they already knew you missed your bloodwork last week. The workday goes well enough, and it was easy to adjust. It was frankly easier to set appointments and answer calls and emails than doing outbound calls, so that was one stress off your shoulders.

How does the doctor's appointment go?
