A local 'tour guide'

Masala was not actually employed by any business on the islands. He was, like many others, self employed as a tour guide, hawking off the island's beauty, legends, culture sights and sounds to the hordes of tourists who come his way. He made his money in collaboration with others who were like him, and on most days, he would make a pretty large stack from selling off the 'authentic history of his island home' to the gullibly ignorant foreigners he sees on a daily and nightly basis. With a bit of investment in all the right places, he had himself a fairly well to do operation.

There were, obviously, other reasons why he kept doing what he did.
