A good breakup

"So that's it, huh?" you asked.

"Yeah, I guess so" Alison replied. She looked sad, probably as sad as you did, but you both knew this was for the better.

"I'm going to miss you, you know" you told her.

"I'm gonna miss you too" she said, putting her arms around you for what was probably going to be the last time as your girlfriend. She looked up at you and gave you one final kiss. It was a good kiss, too. "I figured I'd be your wife, you know" Alison said after she withdrew from the kiss.

"Yeah, well, I guess you win some, you lose some" you replied, looking her in the eyes.

"So true" she said. She sighed and took your hands in hers. "I'm going to miss you" she said before sighing again.

"I know" you said, squeezing her hands. "You should probably get going, though, or else you're going to be here tomorrow."

"I know" she repeated you, letting go of your hands and turning around before facing you one more time and kissing you on the lips the absolutely last time. With a final sigh she turned around and got in her car, waving at you before driving off.

"So that took some time" Dawn said. "Are you going to be okay?" she added after.

"Yeah, I will be" you said as you watched Alison's white Toyota leave your street. "Were you watching this whole time?" you asked as you turned to look at her.

"No, just the final hour" your baby sister teased.

"Don't you have anything better to do than spy on your brother?" you asked.

"I could spy on Rebecca but watching her make sandwiches only captivates for so long" she told you as she went back inside with you following her in.

A few months after you broke up with Alison and she made her move permanent, you got a text message from her.

'Hi' it said.

'Hey Ally. How's it going?'

'Pretty good, considering. How is my fave ex?' she replied.

'Don't you mean your only ex?' you sent back.

'You don't know what I've been up to!' Alison told you.

'Yeah, I suppose. What's up?' you asked, skimming over the fact that she was no longer your girlfriend as fast as you could.

'Well, I have a little surprise for you' your ex told you.

'What is it?'

'You remember Samantha?' she asked.

'I think so' you replied, having some vague recollection of meeting her and seeing her a few times, back when you visited Alison in her student apartment. 'What about her?'

'She just graduated and she's coming your way to start her own bakery' Alison sent you.

'Why here?' you asked.

'Housing prices are good for buyers and her grandparents live nearby' Alison sent. 'But that's not the thing I wanted to tell you.'

'Oh?' you sent.

'I'm just letting you know I gave her your number and you have my blessing if you want to hook up with her' she replied.

'Are you flying on my wing now, Ally?' you asked, amused.

'Yeah, I might as well take care of you from here. I mean, you're a great guy. It would be a shame if you got with some stupid bimbo' Alison sent you.

'Thanks' you replied. In real life you laughed. That was Alison. Even half the country away she cared for you. That made your heart ache even more, because you did miss her, a lot. If you'd been in college still, you would've gone after her, but now that you had a place of your own, it wasn't so easy.

'You're welcome. Here, just to remind you of who she is' Alison said, correctly guessing you didn't really remember her.

'I remember' you said.

'Sure' Alison sent back, adding a :p.

'Okay, so I kinda forgot. Why would I remember her if I only met her when I was with you?' you replied.

'Charmer. Like I said, you can put that charm on Sammie, if you want' Alison sent.

'You are most gracious and giving' you sent back.

'Yeah yeah, flattery's not going to get me to come back to you. Spend that energy on Samantha, lover boy'.

'Well, I'm glad you approve' you told her.

'Approve? I'm the one who thought of it. Two of my best friends hooking up will make them both happy' she sent to you.

'We'll see, Ally' you replied.
