Chapter 9 by RivoCarnelian RivoCarnelian

Do you find a way to open the book?

A clue leads you in the right direction

Browsing through part of your Uncle's correspondence, you find a sketch of the chest all this came in, except it looks slightly different. Fetching a magnifying glass you notice that the pattern on the inside of the lid in the sketch is slightly different.

Turning back to the chest and carefully running your finger over the patterned wood you feel a slight catch and with the aid of a screwdriver you prise the false panel open to reveal a small key and some metal tubes with faded labels on them set into velvet lined compartments. Taking the key, you insert it into the keyhole of the book's clasp and turn. There's a small click and the clasp drops open, allowing you to open the book.

On the inside is an inscription in Latin,

Per mutatio, nos ipsi novimus

You carefully turn the page, the thick parchment stiff against your fingertips and begin to read what you can. The book is written in a mixture of Latin, Greek, Arabic and old-fashioned English, along with other more esoteric scripts that you can't even recognise, let alone translate, so you struggle to understand much of what you read. One thing that you do manage to decipher is that the small metal tubes contain some of the products of your Uncle's knowledge; alchemical tinctures, powders and potions. What you're less sure on is what they actually are, and what they do. Each of the vials is labelled only with a symbol.

You look at each of the vials in turn and see if you can figure out the contents...

Which vial do you examine first?
