Chapter 6
by Cantalope
What now?
A buried temple?
Weaving her way through the dense vegetation Lara's mind is only now beginning to process how dire her situation truly is. The men on the beach had **** rifles and they were obviously part of a greater contingent. Perhaps her fellow crew had already been captured? Or worse? Roth certainly wouldn't give up without a fight and these men didn't look like they took resistance lightly.
"Oh, please be alrig-AAH!"
Lara was so preoccupied that she didn't see the hole until she was in it. Spitting out loam she slowly raised herself up, pushing herself back against a wall with a groan. Her body was definitely feeling the strain of the last 24 hours and she was running out of adrenalin to power through it. Blearily opening her eyes she finds herself in what looks to be a semi-collapsed temple hallway. Sunlight streamed through the hole three meters above her head.
'I need to stop taking these nasty falls.' she thought matter-of-factly.
"Ooook. Where am I? At least it's a decent hiding place." She pushed herself up and wearily examined the walls of the corridor which, despite her battered state, revitalized her. It almost looked older than it should. The stone bricks were so eroded by time that in some places they looked like round stones stuck into the wall. Further down the corridor there was a tiny trickle of water filtering out of the wall into a stone basin. Though wary by nature, Lara was parched beyond reason and eagerly drank the clear water. Beyond that the walls were in better condition. They were covered in detailed, hieroglyphic-like art. Could there have been some kind of pre-Yamatai culture on this island? It seemed to be very patriarchal, there were all kinds of male-power symbols in the art, which would have been completely at odds with the kingdom of the Sun Queen.
There were numerous scenes portrayed amidst the hieroglyphs but Lara could only make sense of a half dozen of them. They seemed to depict some kind of journey... possibly in this very temple. Perhaps there was some kind of right of passage that took place in this temple? From what she could make out, most of the images visualized the many gruesome fates that would befall those who failed the test. She cringed at a graphic and surprisingly realistic display of a man being ripped apart by... claws? Before Lara knew it she had gone over both sides of the corridor twice, to the very edge of the light. She sat back on the bed of moss at the entrance. What was this place? Who had built it? When was it built? The questions and their answers were largely irrelevant at the moment but it gave her an escape from her troubles, if only for the moment. The soft moss and the warm sun lulled her weary mind into unconsciousness. She hazed in and out of sleep until the sun had disappeared behind the mountain.
"(Sigh) Well, I guess that's enough of that." Yawning, she considered what to do next. She had to find the others, she'd spent a full day hiding in a hole from the terrors of the island, who knew what had happened to them. The absolute, silent darkness that surrounded her was also somewhat unnerving. On the other hand she was very uncomfortable with the idea of walking around the island at night. From the beach the place had looked massive, anything could be skulking around out there. Besides, the air down here felt warmer. Homey, somehow. Lara just wanted to curl up and keep sleeping...
Does she spend the night?
