Chapter 14
by SilverSpectre006
Later that night
A Phone Call
Viola drove back up and parked, getting out of the car and walking up to the apartment building. No one outside, but the lights were on in the duplex next door. Definitely could hear the sound of teenage voices inside. She shrugged, walking upstairs to her own room.
"Hello?" She answered her phone, left on vibrate so as to not disturb during work.
"Viola dear, how have you been? You haven't called in a while, you know? How am I supposed to know you're fine?"
She sighed, dropping her lunch box and unbuttoning her shirt before placing her phone call on speaker.
"Hey mom. What's up!"
"Just checking in to see if you're fine sweety, and by the sound of your voice you seem awful tired."
"Yup, tough day at work I guess. I'm doing well, yourself?"
"All good to hear, dearest. You know me, same moody mother I've always been. Have you heard of the news here, another one of your classmates got hitched. What's his name, Nathan? You used to be friends right, do you keep in touch with him?"
She scoffed before laying in bed, kicking her work skirt off and stretching her bare legs.
"Nathan, no we drifted apart. Differences I guess." That and maybe a failed relationship had something to do with that. Break ups, oof.
"Ah, that's a shame. Well he just popped the question and his mother has been bragging about it and telling everyone at the salon all day. Apparently he found himself a good girl, knows how to cook and can look after herself. They make a cute couple, and just hearing them getting engaged made me think of you."
Oh brother, here it comes.
"So that reminds me, are you seeing any men in your life?"
"No mother."
"None at all, no boys?"
"No boys."
...
"Any women in your life?"
"Wha-Mother! Look, I've just been busy and I'm perfectly fine by my own thank you very much."
"I know sweety, I know. But you aren't getting any younger, you know? Can I say something dear, you might not like it but it's what you need to hear."
"Go on."
"You have a tendency to hold a grudge. Sometimes it's best to drop your guard for a bit and be kind to a stranger. Not everyone is going to call you back, maybe you should take the first step to make a bond."
"Huh... yea, I guess."
"There see, you should listen to your mother more often. Mother knows best, you know."
"Hey mom? I have to go, early shift tomorrow okay? Oh and mom... thanks for calling. I love you."
"Of course, dear. You know I'm available to talk to anytime, and feel free to drop by for a visit if you'd like. Love you too, pumpkin."
Click
Viola sighed, letting the phone slip off her fingers and onto bed. Looking to her left, she could see through both windows to find his bedroom door closed.
Take the first step...
She rolled around and saw the crumpled up note where she left it, with the tape still in tact. Smiling, she scooped it up and leaped out of bed, reaching for a pen and some tape.
Done.
'Why am I blushing, stop it.' Viola giggled before going to the kitchen to make herself dinner. The slip of paper was now taped to his bedroom window, with reinforced tape in case of wind.
"Hey, it's Viola. Sorry for that, I'll keep that in mind. Is Lauren your new gf? Well, I guess we both got a closer look at each other huh? How embarrassing, but I hope you enjoyed the show at least hehe."
Wait till he sees this.
