Chapter 5 by IgnusObscuro
Leveling up
A Horde of Rattata
Wandering into the tall grass in Route 1 reminds you of the start of your short career as a Trainer. Even if Ace hadn't particularly warmed up to you yet, she already seemed much more obedient than your Pikachu was. Granted that didn't say much, but you remember reading a study about obedience a while back, which suggested that the more intelligent a Pokémon was, the easier it was to train. You wondered if that concept held true to Pokéslaves.
Shortly after entering the grass you hear numerous rustles around you before a horde of five Rattata surround your Poké****. This was probably not the best start you could have hoped for. A one on one battle would be much easier for Ace, but you'd take what you can get.
A quick scan with your Pokédex informs you of their levels, 4, 3, and 3 2's.
Before you could come up with a plan, the strongest one dashed forward with a quick attack, knocking Ace to the ground as the rest of them inched closer. There was one way you could think of to get out of this though. If you could put the strongest one to sleep and take out the others, you'd have a much better chance.
"Use yawn on the one that just hit you!"
"You want me to lose?" Ace replied before retaliating against the Rattata with a scratch. You're surprised to see sparks light the edge of her fingernails as she attacks. You hold your Pokédex up, scanning in an attempt to classify her ability, although you have some idea what it does, you'd like a full description.
Ability
Galvanize
Normal-type moves become Electric-type and have their power boosted by 20%
3 of the Rattatas responded by waving their tails in a disarming tail whip.
"See? Look at these guys they're hopele-"
She was interrupted by a tackle from behind which gave the first Rattata the opportunity to blindside her with another quick attack.
"Fuck! What did I tell you Ace? They're overwhelming you. It's too late now so just try and take out the strongest."
"Yeah, easier said than done."
A couple scratches later and the first Rattata collapsed. 2 ran away then, but there was still the level 3 and one last level two. Ace was looking worse for the wear.
"Can you keep going?"
"Course I can," She responds, out of breath. "they're just a couple Rattatas. I'm not going to go down to these guys."
She looked unsteady on her feet, but if she was confident that she could take them, you were going to give it another shot.
"Alright, now will you use yawn? You'll only have one at a time to deal with that way."
"Fine."
She then let out a yawn, focusing on the level 3 Rattata. You noticed a charged wave emanate from her mouth and travel towards the Rattata which halted, let out a yawn of its own, and settled down for an unplanned nap. The other one nudged it briefly in confusion and then returned its attention to Ace, charging at her with a tackle. This time, she managed to dodge and followed up with a tackle of her own, her torso brimming with electicity, leaving subtle burns on the shirt she was wearing and pinning the Rattata to the ground. It managed to squirm out however and quickly ran away.
One rude awakening later and a couple more rounds of combat and it was over. Looking her over, you see a number of fresh bruises.
Scanning her with the Pokédex again you notice that she hasn't quite managed to level up, but knowing her ability is certainly helpful.
"Well, good news Ace, we found out what your ability is, Galvanize. So all your normal type attacks are actually electric typed, and 20% more powerful. Pretty useful, all things considered. Kinda wish it was a horde of Pidgeys instead though. It would have been much easier on you."
"Isn't that a pretty rare ability? I don't think I've heard about it before."
"Yeah, it is. One could say you're quite the catch." You respond with a wink.
"Too soon, jackass." Ace retorted, narrowing her eyes at you before turning away.
"Anyways, we should probably get you to a Pokécenter, right? You look like you're not doing so great."
"I've still got some fight in me. Let's try and find some of those Pidgeys you were talking about and really do some damage." Your Poké**** insisted, sparks flitting between her fingertips.
Although she looked a little hurt, she also seemed to be excited at the prospect of fighting some more. You suspect that this is another effect of the Pokéballs, helping to motivate Pokémon to fight, or maybe its as simple as a response to adrenaline. Either way, as long as you don't encounter another large number of Rattata, you should be fine. Besides, if she gets in over her head, you can always call her back to her ball and run away yourself. You head closer to Viridian city, on the hunt for some Pidgeys.
What do you find on the way to Viridian?
