Chapter 5

What is Lara's trial?
A Golem arises
It was moving just out of the light, in one of the most ruined corner of the basement. It was moving - and growing. At first, it was nothing more than a low, thicker shadow. It swallowed a few loose sheets and parchments - literally swallowed them: it left the floor clean and void of any object in its trail. But as he swallowed papers and fragments, it grew. Everything that disappeared within its darkness added to its mass. Lara could not tell if the deep voice, moaning after the stone, came from that frightful incarnation. The thing, the blob of darkness spread towards the door. Lara realized the creature didn't want to leave this place; it wanted to cut her way out!
Her night robe open, she felt a faint and cool breeze rise and caress her body as the monster moved past her. She dared not take her attention off it to fasten her robe; she simply turned to keep facing the thing, her hands a few inches from her waist, ready for anything. Her mind was racing. "It's not human, she thought. It's not an animal. It's... gelatinous? watery? oily?" How could she hurt such a creature? Two small lockets and a book disappeared in the joggling black entity. Conventional weapons would be of no help against it, that's for sure. What to do?
The blob started rocking left and right. Lara suddenly realized she hadn't heard the voice call out since the creature had started moving towards the door. Almost as if the thing was concentrating on a problem. Yes, it looked as if... it was looking for something!
A loud wood snapping sound made Lara startled. It had ripped off a plank of the floor! Suddenly, the faint breeze turned into a screaming gust that send papers flying all around the place. Dust filled the air as Lara quickly covered her mouth and nose with her robe. Just a few meters away, she saw the thing rise in the air in a rotating motion, slowly at first, then as fast as a tornado. A deafening screech pierced the air; veins of a brownish color ran up the spinning substance. Earth and dust tinted its blackness, till the creature was no longer dark but a mix of brown and gray. The wind dropped and the screeching ceased. Again, Lara felt a soft cold breeze rise from the thing as it collapsed on the ground again. She opened wide eyes as she saw the corner of a book and a few loose pages protruding from the unhealthy paste. It looked like a gigantic blob of clay mixed with remnants of a library.
Lara didn't have time to wonder more; with a loud and guttural growl, the creature took shape. A large part of the blob thrust itself upwards. In a matter of seconds, it had morphed into a huge humanoid monster. Its legs were short and stubby, its arms long and strong with enormous fists of clay. It seemed to have no neck, its head barely more than a direct extension of its chest. Two spots on that "head" had retained their pitch black color; it was its eyes.
Lara felt her legs wobble. "A Golem... she muttered. A fucking... Golem!" The gigantic creature of earth and dust fixed its large, horrible eyes on the girl. "Stone!" it said, though it had no visible mouth, its unworldly voice echoing in the basement. "You have... stone!" It extended a gigantic arm towards Lara and took an unstable step forward; a gust of cold wind made Lara's robe fly behind her.
