A Civil Union
It was inevitable, although neither party was particularly invested to it. The first time they got married, it was a big to-do around town, with a huge party. This time, they went to some podunk magistrate outside of town to once again take their vows.
Elizabeth was wearing jeans and a simple peach colored top. Douglas was wearing jeans and a flannel plaid shirt. There was no opulence or ceremony, and the reason for doing it at all was the simple financial benefits that inured to a married couple.
The kids were adjusting ... okay ... to the return of Douglas. But in Douglas's eyes, it was clear that Elizabeth had a favorite now-- her half-Black son, Jamaal Jr., who she now referred to as J.D.
"Alright, well, congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster," the clerk said lazily.
"Actually ... I'm going to stick with Ms. King," Elizabeth said.
