What's next?

2~12

The first rays of dusk were beginning to paint the sky with hues of rose and gold as Kuina surveyed the wreckage. She agreed with her own assessment - traveling at night, wounded and disoriented, would be reckless. Securing a temporary shelter was a necessity. After a quick inspection, she selected a hut that, while damaged, still possessed a relatively intact roof and walls. It would offer minimal protection, but it was better than nothing.

With a determined sigh, Kuina began the arduous task of clearing debris from the chosen hut. She used her remaining strength and a few well-placed bursts of electrical energy to move fallen timbers and piles of rubble, creating a small, relatively safe space within the ruined structure. It wasn't comfortable, but it was dry and offered some semblance of privacy. She gathered what scraps of bedding she could find – a tattered blanket, a few torn cushions – and arranged them in a corner, creating a makeshift bed. The air was still thick with the smell of smoke and decay, but it was a familiar scent, a grim reminder of the battles she had fought and survived.

A small, controlled flame flickered to life within the confines of the hut, casting dancing shadows on the ruined walls. Kuina channeled her remaining magical energy, shaping the flame into a gentle, warming presence that didn’t threaten to consume the fragile structure. The heat radiated outwards, chasing away the lingering chill of the night and offering a small measure of comfort. It was a simple spell, one she had cast countless times before, but tonight, it felt different. It felt… necessary.

As the warmth seeped into her aching muscles, a dam within Kuina finally broke. The stoicism she had maintained throughout the battle, the **** calm she had clung to in the face of unimaginable loss… it all crumbled. A sob wracked her body, shaking her from head to toe. Tears streamed down her face, hot and stinging, as the full weight of the day’s events crashed down upon her. Lael, gone. Her arm, lost. The destruction, the suffering… it was too much to bear. She curled up tightly next to the small flame, her body trembling with grief and exhaustion, and allowed herself to simply feel. The pain was a physical ache, a hollow emptiness that threatened to consume her entirely. She hadn't allowed herself to mourn, not until she had secured a moment of safety, a small pocket of peace amidst the chaos.

Now, with the flickering flame as her only witness, the tears flowed freely. She hadn't realized how tightly she'd been holding everything in, how much she'd been pushing down the grief and despair. Each sob was a release, a small crack in the wall she had built around her heart. She remembered Lael’s laugh, the way his eyes would crinkle at the corners when he smiled. She remembered the warmth of his large hand in hers, the strength of his embrace. And the memory of his final sacrifice, sending her away with the teleport crystal, seared itself into her mind with agonizing clarity.

Exhaustion eventually claimed Kuina, pulling her down into a fitful sleep. Dreams, fractured and haunting, plagued her mind – flashes of the battle, images of Lael, and the chilling visage of the angelic being that had brought so much destruction. She tossed and turned, muttering fragmented words in her sleep, a **** plea for a peace that eluded her.

When Kuina finally awoke, the first rays of dawn were streaming through the gaps in the ruined walls of the hut. The small flame she had conjured the night before had long since died out, leaving the air cool and damp. She felt… better, physically at least. The healing potion had done its work, mending her wounds and restoring some of her strength. The pain in her stumped arm was still present, a dull ache that served as a constant reminder of her loss, but it was manageable. However, the mental scars ran deep. The grief and despair still lingered, a heavy weight pressing down on her spirit. She knew she couldn't afford to succumb to her sorrow, not now. She had a mission, a responsibility to warn her sister Thaline of the impending danger, and to ensure the safety of her children.

With a sigh, Kuina pushed herself to her feet, wincing slightly as her muscles protested the movement. She surveyed her surroundings, taking in the desolate landscape and the ruined village. The air was still thick with the smell of smoke and decay, a grim reminder of the devastation that had unfolded here. She needed to find food and water, and quickly. Traveling north would be difficult, especially with her limited resources and weakened state, but she had no other choice. She had to reach the Kingdom of Órns, and she had to do it as soon as possible.

Kuina cautiously exited the hut, her senses on high alert. The village was eerily silent, save for the gentle rustling of leaves in the wind and the distant caw of a crow. She scanned the surrounding area, searching for any signs of life – or danger. The forest loomed nearby, a dark and forboding presence, but it also offered the best chance of finding both sustenance and concealment. She would need to rely on her skills as a tracker and her knowledge of edible plants.

Kuina approached the forest's edge with a cautious reverence. The trees stood tall and imposing, their branches casting long shadows across the forest floor. She took a moment to attune herself to the natural rhythm of the woods, listening to the subtle whispers of the wind and the distant chatter of wildlife. As an S-rank adventurer, she knew the importance of stealth and patience. Her survival depended on her ability to blend in with her surroundings and make use of the resources at her disposal.

With her senses sharpened, Kuina ventured deep into the forest. Her keen eyes darted from one shadowy recess to another, watching for any movement. She moved silently, her footsteps muffled by the carpet of fallen leaves and soft earth. Her remaining hand instinctively reached for her absent weapon, a reminder of the battle that had cost her so much. But she pushed the thought aside, focusing instead on the task at hand.

She directed her remaining magical energy, channeling it into a subtle augmentation of her physical capabilities. A faint shimmer enveloped her feet, barely perceptible to the naked eye, as she initiated a rapid movement technique. It wasn't true flight, but a form of accelerated locomotion, allowing her to cover ground with incredible speed. She blurred into motion, appearing as a fleeting afterimage as she dashed through the forest, weaving between trees and leaping over obstacles with effortless grace.

She maintained a careful balance, rationing her mana expenditure. Each burst of speed drew upon her dwindling reserves, and she knew she couldn't afford to deplete them entirely. The 'just in case' scenarios weighed heavily on her mind – a potential encounter with hostile creatures, the need for a defensive spell, or the possibility of unforeseen obstacles along the way. She needed to conserve her energy, to ensure she had enough to overcome whatever challenges lay ahead. The forest floor became a blur beneath her feet as she pressed onward, her focus unwavering.

The trees whipped past in a green and brown streak as Kuina maintained her accelerated pace. The forest floor, once a labyrinth of roots and fallen branches, became a blurred tapestry beneath her feet. She moved with a practiced efficiency, her body instinctively adjusting to the uneven terrain. Though her speed was considerable, she remained mindful of her surroundings, constantly scanning for potential threats. The forest, while offering cover, was also home to a variety of creatures, some of which could pose a significant danger to a lone traveler, especially one as weakened as she was.

After what felt like an eternity, the density of the forest began to lessen, revealing glimpses of open fields in the distance. Kuina slowed her pace, gradually reducing the magical augmentation that had propelled her forward. Her lungs burned with exertion, and her muscles ached from the sustained effort, but she pressed on, driven by a sense of urgency. The Kingdom of Órns was within reach, but she knew the journey would not be without its perils.

As Kuina emerged from the forest, she found herself in a breathtaking meadow, awash in a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers. The sheer variety of species was astounding, a riot of colours and fragrance that filled the air. But it wasn't the diversity that caught her attention, it was the lilies. They were everywhere, in every shade imaginable – pristine white, delicate pink, fiery orange, and deep crimson. And they weren’t scattered randomly. They were arranged in a distinct pattern, a swirling design that could only be fully appreciated from above. It was… unnatural. A deliberate creation. A wave of warmth washed over Kuina, a weak smile gracing her lips. She knew, with a certainty that resonated deep within her soul, that this was her daughter’s doing.

Kuina allowed herself a moment to fully appreciate the artistry of her daughter's creation. She circled the floral masterpiece, her gaze tracing the intricate patterns and vibrant colours. It was a testament to her daughter’s skill and a poignant reminder of the love she held for her family. A warmth bloomed in her chest, momentarily eclipsing the grief and despair that had been weighing her down. But the moment of respite was fleeting. The unnatural stillness of the forest, now replaced by this deliberate, almost too perfect display, stirred a sense of unease within her. The absence of animal life along her path was particularly unsettling. It wasn’t normal. Something was wrong.

A prickling sensation crawled across Kuina's skin, raising the hairs on the back of her neck. She halted, her hand instinctively reaching for the phantom weight of her missing weapon. The air hung heavy and silent, devoid of the usual sounds of the wilderness – the chirping of birds, the rustling of leaves, the scurrying of small creatures. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath, anticipating something. She scanned the surrounding landscape, her eyes narrowed in concentration, searching for any sign of movement or disturbance. The idyllic beauty of the floral meadow suddenly felt… ominous. A trap, perhaps? Or a warning?

A sudden gust of wind swept through the meadow, rustling the petals of the lilies and carrying with it a chilling premonition. Moments later, the skies above erupted with life – a chaotic ballet of wings as flocks of birds materialized, their movements frantic and disorganized. They weren't simply flying; they were fleeing, streaming northward in massive, undulating waves. The sight was both mesmerizing and terrifying, a clear indication that something was profoundly disturbing the natural order. As the avian exodus continued, Kuina began to perceive a subtle shift in the atmosphere. An aura, faint yet undeniably present, was spreading across the land, emanating from a distant source. It was too far to discern the exact nature of the presence, but its sheer magnitude sent a shiver down her spine. Whoever – or 'whatever' – was approaching, it was a **** to be reckoned with.

Kuina didn’t hesitate. The fleeing birds and the ominous aura were a clear sign that time was of the essence. Every moment wasted brought the unknown threat closer to Órns Kingdom, and she couldn’t afford to delay her warning any longer. Gathering the last vestiges of her magical energy, she once again initiated the accelerated movement technique, channeling the power into her legs. A faint shimmer enveloped her, and she launched herself forward, blurring into motion as she phased through the air. The strain was immense, each stride pushing her dwindling reserves to their limit. She knew she couldn’t maintain this pace for long, but she had to try. Órns depended on it. The wind whipped past her ears as she raced across the meadow, her focus unwavering, her determination fueled by a **** hope.

Hastily she took out the mana potion from earlier, downing it to continue her pace. Whatever was coming, they were moving fast - especially if she could continue feeling the aura from this far out.

The potion burned a familiar path down Kuina’s throat, the surge of mana a welcome relief to her aching muscles. It wasn’t a complete restoration, but it was enough to stave off exhaustion and allow her to maintain her accelerated pace. The aura, though still distant, hadn’t diminished. If anything, it felt stronger, confirming her fears that whatever was approaching was moving with incredible speed. She glanced back, noticing a veritable stampede of animals erupting from the forest behind her – deer, wolves, boars, even bears, all fleeing in a chaotic surge northward. They were long behind her now, but the sight served as a grim reminder of the magnitude of the threat. She pushed herself harder, her legs pumping, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Every stride brought her closer to Órns, but also closer to the unknown danger that loomed.

The landscape began to shift, the rolling meadows giving way to rugged hills and dense woodlands. Kuina navigated the treacherous terrain with practiced ease, her body responding instinctively to the changing contours of the land. The air grew colder, carrying with it the scent of pine and damp earth. She could feel the proximity of Órns now, a subtle hum of magical energy emanating from the kingdom's protective wards—or what remained of them. The aura continued to grow in intensity, its oppressive weight pressing down on her like a physical burden.

As Kuina crested a hill, a breathtaking, yet horrifying, vista unfolded before her. In the distance, the majestic spires and fortified walls of Órns rose against the horizon, a beacon of civilization amidst the wilderness. Blooming towers of smoke trailed across the southern and western fronts of the cities walls. Demonic-like creatures, similar to the one she faced in the forest - were dying off one by one with ease from the elite squadron of Dragoon fighters.

"Sister..."

Kuina muttered, looking back briefly in the direction she had came from, before sprinting down to Órns...
