Chapter 4 by Nemo of Utopia Nemo of Utopia

* But what specific game or series do you want? *

*Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire*

I'm not bothering to publish Alpha Centauri as a series because it only includes one game and an expansion pack, and the expansion pack is basically just a massive improvement on the base game, with more factions, more techs, more units, a rebalancing of some Secret Projects, and the addition of playable aliens. If someone wants to make a base game Alpha Cent story, they can go back up a level and do it, but why would you when with a single button press in world creation you can set it to all the original factions? On with the Show!

Ah yes: Alpha Centauri. This game is a brilliant addition to the annals of Four-X gaming. Created by Sid Meier and the team behind Civilization II after they left Microprose to found Firaxis games, it became a grand and glorious game in its own right, picking up where Civilization II leaves off.

After a 40 year voyage to Alpha Centauri, the U.N. colony ship Unity is struck by a micro-meteorite and critically damaged. Due to a convergence of several improbable factors the crew mutinies and splits into several factions, who seize control of the Unity's colony pods and abandon the crippled ship in a decaying orbit, choosing to try their luck on the surface of what will later be known simply as 'Planet'.

Thus begins an intricate and detailed game of colonization, research, expansion, and warfare over the next several 'mission centuries' of Planets history, while the disparate survivors play out an ideological conflict between several factions of humanity, led by a group of Quasi-Immortal demagogs representing various aspects of the human psyche: from greed to religion, peace to intellect, lust-for-power to the desire for control. Those introduced in the expansion represented more nuanced and subtle aspects of the human mind, such as the love of the sea, technophilia, and the 'ethics' of the Hacker Elite: plus two factions intended to represent non-human ideas of the universe: the Caretakers and the Usurpers.

However, though 14 factions are included in the game, only seven could play at any one time: plus the "Native Lifeforms", the game's equivalent of CivII's 'Barbarians'.

Now there are some questions to answer:

1: Which faction do you wish to be part of?
2: What will be your position in that Faction?
3: What other Factions exist in this Game?
4: Where/When Does Your Game Start?
5: How Did You Set Up The Map?

Answer The Questions In Italics Above.
