While I'm Gone.

Chapter 1 by RadioGalaxy RadioGalaxy

(This story is a tribute to 'The Cat Lady', and picks up after the ending in which susan talks Mitzi down from killing the 'Eye of Adam'. If you haven't played the game this story may contain spoilers, but even if you don't care I recommend playing or watching a playthrough of the game. Its excellent and very thought and emotion provoking. This story may touch on harsh subjects such as , suicide, depression, and cancer. Please enjoy.)

It has been a week since the incident with the 'Eye' of Adam. That first night returning to the flat with Mitzi she finally broke down and properly grieved for Jack and for herself. I held her that entire first night, stroking her wig, until she had cried herself dry and fell asleep in my arms. My cats surrounded us and Teacup stood vigil over the scene from the nightstand; Those bright yellow eyes like a lighthouse in the darkest night over the ocean of our sorrows. My first true friend slept soundly through the rest of the night and most of the following day, which was gloomy and rainy as per usual where we lived. By the time I had awoken, it was well past 5 o' clock in the evening and I was in dire need of a bath. I suppose dying, reincarnating AGAIN, persuading your distraught friend not to become a murderer, and holding that same crying friend through the night does that.

I crept silently out of the bed, making sure that the young woman didn't wake from her sound slumber, and slunk quietly out of the bedroom. The flat was quiet and dark, just the way I prefered, and my cats were nowhere to be seen. I steped over the faint stain on the floor from where our would-be murderer was mauled to by my little 'children'. Its impossible to get blood entirely out of the carpet it turns out. I've lived in this apartment for years alone, and by now walking around in total darkness is simple, let alone with the faint light provided from outside. Finally, I arrived in the bathroom, and stared for a moment into the inky blackness. With Mitzi paying rent (and a few of my bills by now...), I no longer had to worry about turning on the lights as we always had money in the electric meter.

A few minutes later found me standing in the dimly lit bathroom, the cool tiles feeling wonderful across my bare feet. I stared into the only mirror left unbroken in our 'cozy' home, and gave myself a once over. Before my first little 'accident' with the pills, all I had ever liked about myself were my lovely green eyes. They shone in the same way Teacups yellow ones did, and were quite fetching if I do say so myself. Apart from that my short black hair was unkempt and frizzy, and the corners of my eyes had crows feet. My skin was sallow, and I was begining to show signs of age from the sad and lonely way I had been living. Since Mitzi came a month ago however, I had been taking better care of myself and she has been forcing me to eat better like a much younger nanny.

Now I look pretty good for a middle aged woman in my opinion, I've kept myself in shape these years alone aside from a bit of smoking. My hair looks more healthy, and my skin is now smoother and more pale than before (In a healthy way mind you!). My high cheekbones still reminded be a bit of that back-stabbing (or... front-stabbing actually...) filth of a doctor, but admittedly they did give me a regal air that I quite enjoy with Mitzi around. My breasts have kept up remarkably well over the years and still had a bit of that lift that defied gravity. I had always been stronger than I looked, and it could be said that my body was still lovely and a bit curvy in the right places. I smiled, and turned my back on myself to undress fully and turn on the bath.

The pipes which ran along the wall creaked and groaned with the age of the plumbing but I could hear the water flowing through, (We've fixed the pipe we broke when trying to free ourselves from the duct-tape lunatics binds.) After letting the steaming hot water fill the tub, I slowly dipped myself in until I was sitting fully, the water-level just below my modest breasts. The heat and the quick motion made me a bit dizzy and the room span slightly in my vision. The soak was doing wonders for my tired body, and I closed my eyes for a couple of minutes to relax fully.

Mitzi wakes up alone...
