The Book of Truth

Truth is what you make it

Chapter 1 by Valentine Valentine

John loved when he found a new bookstore. There was just something so exciting about walking into a dusty old room that smelled of dry paper and was full of endless possibilities. In most instances those possibilities resolved into Pulp novels from the 50's, old men playing chess in some back room, and if you were unlucky an owner with hygiene habits that ranked slightly worse than a medieval peasant's. Sometimes though you'd find treasure. Last month alone John had found an original copy of The Lord of the Rings and a signed Steven King novel. Full of hope John carefully open the creaking door (you don't want to open a bookstore's door to fast because you might knock something over) and walked in.

The place was dark the light bulbs were giving off a dim orangey glow that made John feel like they were going to burn out at any second. The windows were grimy but even if they had been clean it wouldn't have mattered, every available surface was stacked high with books and only a hint of the actual windows could be seen. John walked through very slowly careful to avoid bumping the stacked towers that loomed around him. He appeared to be the only one here and was about to call out to see if the owner was around when he heard a small cough. Standing behind him was a very interesting man. Only four feet tall but not with the usual stockiness of a little person or the hunched infirmity of a senior citizen the man felt long, as though he had been two feet tall then someone had stretched his entire body out leaving him lanky and thin. He wore a suit that fit him so well that it had to have been tailor made for him, he had on a small hat that covered but did not conceal his slate grey hair. He wore a monocle and his short beard and mustache looked like they had been cut using a ruler. He carried in his hands a cane, though he did not appear to need it in order to walk and looked at John as though he was sizing him up. This continued for a full minute before he finally decided to speak.

"Welcome to Mephisto's House of Curiosities." He said his voice, though high pitched, had a level of depth to it that made it carry around the entire store. "You may purchase any book provided you are able to open it." He then turned and walked off.

John was confused but figured this must just be the places gimmick, some stores had them to help attract customers. He grabbed a random book off a nearby shelf and tried to open it. Nothing happened. He tried harder using both hands and pulling with all his might. Still nothing happened. John put the book back and grabbed another one, same results. He tried this again ten times and couldn't get a single book to open for him. It made no sense, the books clearly didn't have locks. Frustrated he forgot to watch where he was going and accidentally knocked over a massive stack of books. When the dust settled he found himself staring at a new book. It was large and very old the cover was bound in ancient leather. He was enraptured by it and so didn't even notice the sound from the rafters.

In the rafters Mephisto lounged on a beam. "Fool even I cannot open that book. If you can't open even a simple spell book or academical recipe book then you have no chance of even touching it." He then watched as with no apparent difficulty John picked up the book and opened it to the first page.

John turned with a start when he heard a loud thump from behind him. Mephisto was lying on the ground and it looked like he fell from somewhere high up.

"Put that book down!" He shouted urgently.

"Oh come on you said I could purchase any book I could open."

"You foolish mortal that is no ordinary book. That is the Book of Truth anything written within it instantly becomes true."

"Ha yeah right dude I like the commitment to the bit but seriously take it down a notch. I mean if what you're saying is true then what would happen if I did this." Then as Mephisto watched, too incredulous to know what to do John whipped out a pen and wrote down at the top of the first page The Book of Truth belongs to John Doe. "Now how much does it cost dude I like the leather binding and could use a new journal.

"Cost?" said Mephisto with some confusion. "Why would you pay me for your own property? Now get out of my store you caused a mess." John was somewhat nonplussed by this response but he figured that he old shopkeeper had decided that it was better to get rid of him than worry about the $5 he'd get from the journal. Mephisto watched him go carefully and was relived when he heard the door close. He didn't want the owner of the Book of Truth hanging around his store that thing was nothing but trouble.

John arrived back at his apartment about 20 minutes later and then sat down with the book. What the old man had said intrigued him. It obviously wasn't true but hey it could be a fun lark. he opened the book at the first page and thought about what he wanted to be true. He then wrote three lines in quick succession.

John Doe has $10,000,000 in his bank account that he earned legally and pays no taxes on.

John Doe is able to stay in perfect shape without exercise or eating right.

John Doe has a 12 inch long penis.

John lurched as he felt his body change. He felt a bit taller, he pulled up his shirt and saw that he had some pretty solid abs he also felt stronger and faster, more full of energy. He pulled out his phone and checked his bank account, sitting there in his savings account was $10,000,000. He could hardly believe it. Then he checked inside his pants.

John hadn't exactly been small before but he hadn't been out of the ordinary now his dick hung halfway down his thigh while soft. He felt giddy, he sat down and tried to think of his next move so many possibilities were open but practicality first he needed to check a few things so he wrote in the Book of Truth.

John Doe knows and understands all of the rules of the Book of Truth

Suddenly his head was flooded with knowledge and he quickly absorbed it and figured out the basic rules

-Anything written in the Book of Truth will become true

-Anything written in the Book of Truth will always have been true

-The writers intent is understood to a certain extent (So writing John Doe is valid even without other distinguishing features)

-Anyone can write in the book

-Only the writer will know how the world has changed

-Others who read what was written may try to figure out how the world changed but will not be able to tell for sure

-Anything written disappears after 24 hours and becomes permanent

-Newly written truths may counteract old truths but after 24 hours even the writer forgets the old world

-If a truth would cause major problems (such as the die off of the human race) then any necessary changes to make the truth work will also be incorporated

-The writer will have a vague idea of any additional changes but will not know the specifics

-Specific wordings are important so if for instance a writer uses their name to designate them self for a truth and then their name changes the truth no longer effects them until their name changes back

With these rules all in mind John sat down pen in hand. John wasn't just an old book collector he was also what a respectable person would call "A real pervert" and he was about to live out his dreams.

What does John do first?
