Targaryen Alliances

Who will be chosen?

Chapter 1

It was on the first day of the new Summer that Prince Jon Targaryen, Second in line to the Iron Throne was called from his chambers to see his father, the King. Rhaegar was once a great warrior, but the years and frequently illness had reduced him considerably, yet as he sat behind the oak desk in his study, there was a quiet strength in his purple eyes as he regarded his youngest child.

“My boy,” he said with a faint smile. “ I’m glad you came so quickly, time is of the essence.”

“ what is it, Father?”

“There is something that I must tell you,” he winced, his body trembling with pain, “I’m dying...it’s...been a long time coming,” he stood and put a hand on Jon’s shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. “ You mustn’t grieve, not yet. We have much to do to preserve the realm before my time comes, and as my youngest I must ask if I can I count on you to help me with this last task?”

Jon swallowed his tears and nodded. “Aye, Father.”

“Good,” he smiled faintly, “ we haven’t much time. I have had word of stirrings against us. Forces from both the Far East and here in Westeros that seek to smash all that I have worked for. A kingdom is in the stages of transition and your brother Aegon will need help to stabilise his reign once I am gone.”

Jon sucked in a shaky breath, struggling to smother his grief. “I will do it, Father, whatever it is.”

“I thought so,” Rhaegar gestured to a great map of the Seven Kingdoms on his desk, “What we need right now is a strong alliance to help shore up our might, ” his smile faded, “It is a great duty...but I am asking you to wed another of the great Houses, and bind them to us.”

Jon saw the logic and felt himself nod, “If it will help our family, then I shall do my duty.”

“The Lannisters or Tyrells would perhaps be the most advantageous to our family, with their wealth and military. Tywin’s Granddaughter Marcella is of age, and I hear many great things about Margaery Tyrell. But...that said... Baratheon, Stark and Greyjoy all have unwed daughters too.”

The Prince frowned. “ Those are all Houses who fought against you in the Rebellion.”

“Oh yes, but Lord Stannis is one of the greatest commanders in Westeros, Balon Greyjoy’s Fleet is nigh unstoppable at sea, and your Uncle Ned Stark command’s the fervent loyalty of the largest of the Kingdoms. They all have daughters whom you might wed, but...yes there are those in the South who will not let go of old wounds.” Rhaegar laughed. “As you can see, there are many considerations to be had. You must weigh each before you choose, soon...before I am gone. So think carefully, the choice is yours.”

Which House does Jon choose?
