Tales of Kjeldorn

The Kingdom of Helm has always been the envy of all civilized nations upon the world of Kjeldorn and beyond. With a rich ecology and plentiful resources,a warm climate and an abundance in rains, Helm has always been the crowns' gem for the human Empire. The majority of Wars have been fought for this land, and the worlds' very history unravels around Helm's fate. For over five hundred years, the various races have fought each other for the right to rule these divinely blessed-or some would say cursed-lands, but it was humanity that held the greatest influence. For nearly two hundred years, the Alfin had conquered these lands and enslaved the humans within. It is this invasion and the subsequent human rebellion that has caused the enmity that still exists among these two races. The hatred that has developed between humanity and alfins, was cause for great suffering and bloodshed among the two races, and was also responsible for the Awakening of the Old Ones- the greatest threat the world has ever faced!

Nothing could have prepared the world for the Terror that was about to be unleashed. No one knows where they came from or how they came to be trapped upon our world. What we do know is that they do not belong here. Their very presence corrupts not only the body but also the immortal soul. And they know it! They use this "trait" of theirs to slowly mutate and warp the creatures of the world, giving them forms more disgustingly suitable to their own corrupt images and far more susceptible to their influencing abilities. These reformed creatures were named 'Devouts of Darkness' or 'Children of the Dark One', but more often referred to simply as the Devout. What started off as a small cult of demon worshipers and maniacs, soon turned into a nation of occultists, mages, and other power hungry creatures that were under the control of creatures more ancient and cunning than the Gods themselves! It was not long before the Devout started posing a threat to all sane creatures, especially humans whom they particularly despised, since it was mainly from their societies that the most numerous Devout held.

And yet, even with the aid of their new Masters and the gifts that they gave to their subjects, the Devout could not have easily defeated the humans. That is why their otherworldly Masters also provided them with an army of mighty fiends from the Netherlands and another composed of the unliving denizens of the realm of . With such mighty forces at their disposal, and the advantage of a surprise attack, the Devout were able to finally conquer Helmguard, the Capitol of the Empire and most of the country as well!

And so our tale begins, merely months after the Fall of Helmguard in the hands of the Devout. Despite their victory, the children of the Dark One do not completely control the City and the surrounding countryside. There are still many rebels hiding among the ruined buildings or within the Catacombs, the city's sewers and even the graveyard!

Other humans have been taken as slaves, or have been into a semi-slavery, where they have to work for the conquerors to retain some freedom, while others yet have turned into Mercenaries working for anyone capable of hiring them, or have completely forsaken their friends and families and sided with the Enemy. It is here that our story begins, in a city where no one can be trusted and everything can be a threat.
