Indentured servitude

“Wake up! We’re almost there!”

You open your eyes slowly getting used to the bright afternoon sun as the trees go by outside the car. You’re currently on your way to your uncle’s mansion in the New England countryside, away from any city. You had only met your uncle at Christmas and family gatherings, and even then you had only seen him at your own mansion or at your grandparents NYC penthouse apartment. Now though, you were set to spend an entire summer with him while your parents were busy negotiating with the CEOs of a competitor to facilitate a merger that may or may not violate a few antitrust laws, but with the right bribes here and there would go unnoticed.

Being their only child, you had wanted to stay and hopefully learn something from them, but they had refused, muttering something about NDAs and how they’d made your uncle a promise or something. You were too busy sulking to pay attention.

The various fir trees that grow thick in this part of the country to the point where you can’t see further than 5 feet into the woods on either side of the two lane road the limo was on went by in a blur. You yawn and rub the sleep from your eyes, as you feel the car slow and make a turn onto gravel.

The limo slows down to a stop at an intricately crafted wrought iron gate in the road. After a second where your family driver talks to someone through an intercom set up outside the gate, it opens and you are let through.

Another minute of driving brings you to the mansion itself: a tall, grand, red brick colonial style building that takes up almost an entire hilltop in the middle of a large clearing. The car stops again and you get out, stretching your legs after a 5 hour trip and enjoying the fresh air of the countryside.
