Final Fantasy Worlds

Gathering of Heroes

Chapter 1 by FallenSaint FallenSaint

Cosmos looked across the worlds, across the timelines. Each was so full of life. Children played and laughed. Flocks of Chocobo ran across fields. She could also see the battles. Heroes of all kinds, fighting to save their worlds from threats both great and small. But they were in balance. She couldn't interfere. It was against the rules that both she and Chaos were bound by. Only when the balance was broken, could they dare to let their powers shine upon the worlds. That was just how things were. Harmony and Discord, in equal measure. A perfect balance. Simple and beau-..... Wait.... Cosmos watched in horror as one timeline began to ripple. She looked along it, tracing it to the source. There!

A massive hole in the timeline. She knew this place. It was the great city of Midgar! Time wouldn't flow correctly without it! Then she felt more ripples begin, in various worlds. She looked to see what was causing them and each time she missed the event and found only a hole. But then she saw it. Rising into the sky was the Tower of Babel from a separate world. Red tendrils of power gripped the massive tower and pulled it deep into the void. She allowed her power to follow it, sense where it was going. And then she found them all. Everything that had been stolen into the darkness. Midgar, Babel, the Calm Lands, and many other places. The people and monsters residing in these areas having been pulled right along with them. Then she saw him. Chaos, God of Discord, placing his throne atop the tower of Babel. He sat in it and lazily looked along her tendril of power, giving her a sly smile. His demonic features began to break into a deep chuckle.

"What will you do now, little Goddess? Come here and take back what I have stolen? But then you would leave the other worlds to crumble to dust without their lands in balance."

He chuckled again and smacked away her power as if it were nothing, and she let it retreat back from the darkness. He was right, she couldn't just leave the worlds like this. She would have to support them herself, and that would take most of her power. She was powerless to stop him. No, not powerless, just unable. She would have to choose someone else to do it. Looking across the worlds, she saw many potential Heroes. But she couldn't send them all. She didn't have enough power. She had to choose five. She quickly made up her mind and began reaching out to summon her Chosen. She would summon them and send them to Midgar. It was a large city and surely they could find allies there.

Deep in the void, at the world Chaos had created, the God broke into a true laugh. So that was her answer? Send someone else to do her duty? He could play that game as well. His new world was still weak. It wasn't properly bound because there was no Harmony to counter his Chaos. Binding it together into a true "World" would take time. So while she chose five, he would choose three. He had monsters that they could use to tip the balance in his favor. It had been so long since he had been interested in anything. Boredom had began to rot both his and Cosmos' powers. This little game might just give them both the kick they needed. Well, until he won at least.
