A Gift From the Cosmos

Chapter 1 by Cretan_Bull14 Cretan_Bull14

I remember the day that I had received “The Gift.” It was unlike any other day in my life, or in history for that matter. I was always a space junkie. When I was a kid my room was covered with star stickers. I had all the constellations on my ceiling. You could point to any star and ask me what it was, and I’d be able to tell you. I had tapes and DVDs of every space show, movie and shuttle launch ever made. Well, maybe not all of them, but you get my point.

For my 19th birthday, I got a brand new telescope. It was a beauty. It was one of the most advanced telescopes on the market. Not only could it could easily see all the planets and dwarf planets in our solar system, but it could also be fitted with a camera, and it had a port to connect it to a computer. This thing could be programmed from the computer to any location in the cosmos and snap a photo of it.

After about a week of figuring out how to work my new toy, I noticed an object in the sky. It looked like a star but was much brighter. It clearly wasn’t a planet, so I thought it might be a comet. I went to the computer to identify what it was. Interestingly, there weren’t any reports of a comet, nor were we supposed to be visited. I ran to the telescope to get a glimpse of it. When I peered into the lense and focused I saw a big blue ball near the belt of Orion. I wrote down the co-ordinates and took a second glimpse.

That’s when it happened. A beam of light shot from the comet and went directly into the telescope and straight into my eye. I was thrown back a good twenty feet. I laid motionless for what seemed like hours. When I was finally able to move, I had the world’s worst headache. In fact, my entire body felt like shit. I thought I had been struck by lightening, but there were no burn marks on me. The telescope was completely fine, nothing broken or melted and was still pointing to where the comet had been. After the incident, the comet had vanished. I felt like I was a star in my own sci-fi movie but where would this lead. I decided that I had had enough star-gazing for one night and packed it in.

What was my morning like?
