Shiro searched the rest of the bandit camp. She found several more villagers captured, freeing them as well. She also found a shack that she refused to let anyone else inside, burning it to the ground. The mauled bodies of the rest of the villagers were inside, apparently taken to feed the oni with the survivors next on his menu.
Shiro helped the frightened peasant girl onto her horse and brought the abductees to the village. Sakura’s parents ran to her right away, and the prisoners to their various relatives and friends.

Shiro just waited quietly on her horse, tying some supplies she’d taken from the bandits and what the villagers offered.
“We don’t have much,” Sakura’s father said, a bit shamefully. “But we owe you much.”
She wanted to say that their thanks was enough, but this was how she lived. “It will do. But I must get going. I know of someone who can repair my katana.”
The father nodded. “Sakura told us. Here.” He held up a short blade. It was a bit worn and unkempt, but suitable for simple stabbing and slicing. “I know it’s nothing special, but it‘s a family heirloom…”
“Thank you. It’ll do for now.” Shiro accepted the weapon. “I’d best be going though. I have more work to seek.” With a simple nod she turned and started on her way.
