Whom does he meet next?
new girlfriend
"You're satisfied," Naomi says, her voice a calm blade in the dark. "But don't get comfortable. A man with your reputation needs a tether to reality. Something wholesome. Something undeniable. But more importantly, something that will make Charlotte Kennedy realize she isn't the only woman who can command a room.
"I lean against the railing of the ranch porch, rubbing my face. At 5'9", I’ve spent my career making up for my height with a loud voice, but tonight, I just feel drained. "Naomi, it's midnight. I'm too tired for more optics."
"I don't deal in 'later,' I need to introduce your first girlfriend for couple months" she says. She whistles once, a sharp, commanding sound. "Heidi? Come out here."
The door to the cottage swings open. A figure steps into the pool of the porch light, and I find myself straightening my posture instinctively. She’s 5'11", giving her a clear two-inch advantage, but she doesn't use it to loom. She uses it to occupy space with a poised, deliberate confidence. Her hair is a deep, striking Auburn, and her eyes—a sharp Bluish-Green—lock onto mine with surgical intensity.
She isn't wearing athletic gear. She’s in a white baby doll dress—short, flowy, and high-waisted—that shows off her long, athletic legs. On anyone else, it would look innocent. On her, it looks like a calculated choice.
"This is Heidi Sloan," Naomi says, her voice trailing with a hint of pride. "'Red' to her team. Middle blocker for Stanford. She doesn't just play the game; she controls the environment."
I look up at her. I expect the bashful interest Naomi promised, but this version of Heidi is different. She studies my rumpled suit and tired expression with a magnetic, ambitious curiosity. She doesn't blush. She doesn't fidget. She simply offers a small, knowing smile.
She steps closer, her presence so controlled and self-assured that it’s almost intimidating. She doesn't try to minimize her height; she owns it, looking down at me like I’m a high-value asset she’s just acquired. She leans down slightly, her Auburn hair brushing my shoulder as she speaks directly into my ear.
"It’s an honor, John," she whispers, her voice a low, magnetic hum. "I’ve watched your career. I always preferred the way you operated over the usual athletic types. You’re strategic. I think we’re going to be a very interesting project."
Her hand—firm and warm—lingers on my arm for a second too long, a deliberate touch that feels like she’s marking her territory. I glance at Naomi, who is watching us with a satisfied, predatory stillness.
"She’s your match," Naomi murmurs to me. "Charlotte thinks she’s the only one who can play the long game. Wait until she sees you with a woman who can read her before she even speaks. Heidi isn't just a girlfriend, John Doe. She's the person who’s going to make Charlotte lose her composure."
I look back at Heidi. She’s standing there, elegant and guarded, a 5'11" beacon of hyper-confidence. She isn't looking for a savior. She’s looking for an ally."
The honor is mine, Heidi," I say, offering a hand.
As she takes it, her grip firm and steady, I realize Naomi was right. This isn't just optics. This is an invitation to a much more dangerous game.
