Chapter 3

You...
...check out the upper level.
Pretty much everything about the cabin so far was logical or, at worst, explainable. Even the creak of every-other-step on the staircase was sure to be related to how they were built.
The view from above did nothing to paint the lower level in a new light, other than to reinforce how odd the round table with three chairs and an empty space seemed.
The first room to examine was the one closest to the stairs. There was no light from the open doorway even though it was still early evening. No window? Thick curtains?
The light switch clicked normally, and a full second later the room illuminated. The light revealed a twin bed with a thick, brown quilt to match the downstairs couches. A simple desk sat in the corner with what, presumably, was the fourth chair from the downstairs set. A small adjoining bathroom provided nothing noteworthy- neither rustic nor modern. The single bulb that hung freely from the high ceiling of the bedroom was the only light. There were no curtains and no windows.
The next room was more appealing. A single bed with an embroidered flowery quilt. An even smaller bathroom: toilet and sink without a shower. And dark curtains that, when pushed aside, revealed sliding doors to a balcony. The view across the valley below was exceptional.
Aside from the expected telescope, the only other thing on the balcony was bemusing- a fifth in the set of chairs.
