Chapter 6
by remote74
a stopwatcy, an odd pair of glasses, a CD-rom, a box of vials, or something else?
a CD
Reaching under the floorboard, you pull out a CD. Despite being covered in dust, it has no visible scratches, and you can think of no reason to leave it here. Still, this CD is useless unless you can call someone and get home to a computer.
Searching around the abandoned office, there is little but cobwebs, dust, and abandoned desks. Searching through various drawers, you finally find an old cellphone battery, and praying that it fits, it gives you just enough juice to make a call to your neighbor, who graciously picks you up, and gets a tow-truck to take your car to a repair shop. You thank your neighbor profusely, and she tells you that you're sure to repay the favor someday.
Pulling out keys, you move your way inside. Sitting down at your computer table, you stare at the now-cleaned CD. Deciding the worst could be a virus, you prepare as much Viral Protection as possible and upload the CD. Surprisingly it contains a video file. The image is sketchy, but the voice is clear.
"My name is Dr. Cruzer, age 68. For many years, I have worked on the human genome. Progress was good, but perhaps my time had come. The US Government finally intervened in the final stages before testing, and shut me down. Every computer was destroyed or scrapped, but in an effort to save my research, I saved the most crucial portions on this disk. It was of course my intention to retrieve this disk after a suitable period of time had elapsed, but since you are now watching this, it is obvious that I may never have another chance at my life's work. Since it is probable that at my age, I may have finally succumbed to ****, I leave this to you. After watching this file, another program will begin to download. Watch it through, and glory in everything I can give you." The file ends, but the download does not begin. Frantic, you look towards the bottom righthand corner of your screen. One of your viral protection software is asking for permission to delete the file that is attempting to upload.
You heave a sigh and decide you might as well press your luck. You press the shutdown on your viral software and the download begins.
