Chapter 4
by MidnightJumper
Who is calling for help?
Your old hometown crush
A bolt of lightning ran up my spine. Another person? Was it possible?
I didn't care if it made sense. I had to do something. As I had done plenty of times now, I pulled out my shotgun, loaded it up with a fluidity of movement that I would have found impressive only a few weeks ago, and got to work.
As soon as they heard they bang, a few scattered. The rest set their sights on me. When I ran out of ammunition on the shotgun, I switched to the revolver, taking out a few in the back of the group, whilst kicking back the ones at me feet and hacking them with a long knife. It was short work, made shorter by my desperation to find another human, alive.
One of the windows was open, enough boards having been ripped off that there was a hole big enough to crawl inside. Huddled in the corner was a girl, scratches on her arms, her face in her hands, sobbing.
"Hey, excuse me... are you okay?" I asked. She looked up.
Behind those tears and fear-gripped eyes, I recognised her. Rosie- she had long, light brown/blonde hair, fairly small breasts and a thin frame, but curves in all the right places. She was gorgeous, even in her current state. I had gone to school with her when we were both young, but never knew her that well. In recent years, I would see her around town, but never talk much. I did notice how beautiful she had become though, and her sweet smile would always bright up my day. It was odd, that this was the only other human I had found alive in all the world, but I wasn't going to complain.
"John? John Doe? Is that really you?"
"It's me. Are you hurt?" She just stared at me stunned. I was stunned too, but tried hard to keep my composure, for her sake.
I changed topic as she didn't seem to respond. "How long have you been here on your own?"
"Umm... I was counting, but then I lost track a few weeks ago... probably about 3 months. Are... are you alone?" I could see the hope in her eyes, but this time I was too baffled to respond. 3 months? I hadn't been looking after myself much more than a month. That would mean I was **** for 2 months. That would be impossible, wouldn't it? How was I not dead?
"John? Are you alone? Please. I need to know."
"Sorry Rosie. You're the first person I've seen in months. I don't understand any of this. I don't know how we could both still be alive."
She lowered her head, and stifled another sob.
"Look, why don't you come with me, I know a safe place. Then we can talk."
Does she come?
