Chapter 2 by The_Magician The_Magician

How do you react?

You flip out (woman's perspective)

"I must be going crazy!" you think, feeling your face with your hands to make sure that it's still there. "I must be dreaming, or hallucinating, or--or, dead! Maybe I'm a ghost! That's why I can't see myself. My God, I think I'm losing my mind!"

You try opening and closing your eyes again, Nothing. You can feel your lids closing, but you see the clean, polished floor tiles clearly right through them. You pinch your arm, pull your hair, stomp your feet--do anything to wake yourself up, but nothing seems to work. "What am I going to do?" you wonder, your mind racing, trying to comprehend what's happening to you. "I can't go into work like this," you think. "My boss won't even know I'm there." The thought of going into work invisible suddenly strikes you as preposterous and you laugh out loud.

"Oh my God," you think. "I'm losing it."

You rush out of the bathroom, almost tripping as your towel slips away from you and gets tangled in your legs. "I need to call Mary-Jane," you think. "She'll know what to do."

You run into the living room and pick up your phone, almost dropping it. Your hands are shaking so much you can barely speed-dial Mary-Jane's number. As you wait for Mary-Jane to pick up, you happen to glance in the window. You can see the outline of the bathroom door reflected in the window, but there is no sign of you anywhere. Your heart skips a beat when you realize that that weird white blob reflected in the window is the reflection of the phone, hanging suspended in mid-air.

After ten rings the phone picks up and you hear a voice on the other end. "Hello?" it asks, audibly annoyed.

"Mary-Jane!"

"What--? Sarah? What are you--?"

You cut her off. "I'm invisible," you say, trying to control the tremor in your voice.

"What?! What are you talking about?"

"I'm invisible! I can't see myself!"

"Are you high?"

"No, Mary-Jane, I'm not high! I'm invisible!"

"Sarah, what the fuck are you talking about?"

"I don't know. I've turned invisible. I can't see myself. You have to help me!"

"Sarah, tell me what's going on! What do you mean you're invisible?"

"I mean I'm invisible. What do you think I mean? I mean I can't see myself."

"Hold on." Pause. "Sarah, I'm coming over. Don't go anywhere."

"I won't. Thanks."

You hang up the phone. Suddenly there is a knock on the door. You look at the clock: five thirty. Who the fuck could that be? You can't very well answer the door like this. Who would be knocking at this time of the morning? Should you go answer it? Maybe you could tell them to f-off through the door. That at least would get rid of them. Maybe you should just ignore it.

The knock repeats.

Who is at the door?
