You are still you

"Legally you are still you." the doc explains "This, ah, procedure doesn't change that any more than any other transplant would. Our legal team has been quite busy on this point. We've even been able to update your documentation to reflect your new appearance."

He hands you a drivers licence with Katie's picture and your name and address on it by way of an example. You stare at it struck by the realisation that you will not be able to simply vanish into Katie's life. For better or for worse you will have to face your friends and family with this new face. There are obvious benefits, you'll have access to your savings and you'll be able to move back into your old apartment but you can't imagine how people are going to react to the new you. Especially your ex-wife. She never thought you were much of a man, she'll probably find the idea that you are now a girl hilarious.

Suddenly it's all too overwhelming. Your head spins and your vision narrows to a dark tunnel. You are on the verge of fainting and if it wasn't for the doctor holding you up you'd probably fall. He lifts you easily and carries you back to the bed. Distantly you are aware of an odd fluttering in your stomach as he lays you on the clean covers and brushes long red hair out of your eyes. You don't remember him being so big or strong and you wonder if he has been working out.

"Oh you know I try and stay in shape." he chuckles and you feel your face heat up as you realise you spoke out loud. "But the important thing now is you get some rest. Your body is still very weak and you've got a busy day tomorrow."

You mumble a response that seems to satisfy him and he leaves turning out the light as he goes. You touch yourself under the covers marvelling at how smooth and sensitive your new skin is but you are too exhausted to do any real exploration. Instead, you let sleep claim you.
