Chapter 3 by Avalanche Avalanche

Do you join willingly?

You've a few questions to ask first...

Faced with such a situation, you consider what exactly is going on.

This sisterhood, whatever the hell they do - they said something about magic and channeling or something, but it makes little sense - really seems intent on having you join their numbers, despite your being male - a condition they also have the ability to remedy, it seems. Certainly they don't make a habit of this; it'd be annoying and contradictory, being a sisterhood. So then... why you? Are you a special case?

You face the sisters. "Do you guys mind if I ask a couple questions first?"

The sisters bow their heads in unison for a moment, then look up at you again. You notice their eyes are no longer glowing. Melanie takes on the duty of conversing with you. "You may, but you're limited to three questions. We don't want to waste any time."

Good. You should only need two anyway. "Thank you. So first, what exactly is it that you guys do? It didn't seem too clear from your earlier summary."

Melanie smirks. You're relieved that her eyes aren't glowing, but you suddenly wonder what it would look like if they were.

"Well, I suppose I could elaborate on that. I basically said earlier that we channel magic through ourselves, right? We don't really use internal magic power or anything; we take it from the atmosphere. Magic energy exists all around you, all over the place. It's good to have it there; it's the source of miracles and such. The problem is when too much concentrates; that's when we get the wrong wishes and miracles happening.

"You see, magic as an overt discipline pretty much ceased many centuries ago, and that caused magic energy to overconcentrate. And after a few disasters... it was decided that a solution was needed. So the Sisterhood was created underground to use up excess magic by becoming magicians (of varying types) and casting spells as needed. We don't have any duty other than to use magic - there's not any type of magic we need to use or anything specific to do with it - and depending on the style of magician you become, you can do pretty much whatever you want, within a few limits."

She looks at you more directly, having finished her wordy explanation. "Satisfied?"

You smirk back. Looking good so far, but let's keep pressing. Something still doesn't make sense. "Well, for that question, yeah. Something else had been bugging me, though - why do you need me of all people? I mean, even if I had any prior relation to you guys, I'm still a guy. I can't imagine you regularly recruit males - it'd defeat the purpose of it being a "sisterhood." Am I... a special case or something?"

The sisters break ranks and begin to murmur to each other. Excellent. You've really hit on something.

Moments later, three of the sisters migrate toward the back of the room, exiting through a door in the back of the room. After a few seconds, Melanie hastily tries to compose herself, blurting out, "They- They're going to get the Arc. She's kinda the leader of our division. I think she'll be able to explain this a lot better than I can."

A minute passes before the door opens again. The three from before re-emerge, followed by a younger-looking girl. Despite her appearance age-wise, though, she is definitely of higher rank than the others here. She wears black slacks rather than the skirt and tights combination, and her jacket is loose, decorated with two sets of large diagonal navy-blue stripes on each side, forming a pair of inverted V-shapes. Her messy whitish hair is a bit long, but still quite boyish. To top off the look, she sports a pair of dark sunglasses. The normal sisters definitely look attractive and fashionable, but this girl looks... kinda cool.

She catches your gaze and smiles warmly. You're sure her eyes widened underneath her shades. "So, they really did find you after all. And you're so inquisitive, too. I had hoped as much."

Your smirk softens slightly. "Glad to see you're amused. Do I get that question answered? I seem to have a life-changing decision on my hands, after all."

She giggles. "Oh, sure, why not. This'll involve a bit of history and stuff, but I'll try to keep it succinct. I should tell you a few things about us, first, just to erase some confusion.

"Since magic is fun and all, people don't like growing out of it or anything. Keeping one's youth is really a piece of cake for us, considering all the things we can do. As a result, you'll find that many of those here have been around for several decades, or even centuries. Also, as all sisters are attracted only to other girls as a rule, pairs of lovers - well, sometimes groups - emerge every so often amongst us. As time passes, they may wish to have children with one another, and while this is currently impossible for normal humans, magic makes such things simple - And no, phalli is also completely unnecessary. ahem But I'm straying a bit now. Let's get to the point."

With a wave of her hand, a rather transparent screen appears in the air. The sisters sit down and watch, fawning over the picture. The current picture shows two women smiling and holding each other closely, hand in hand. Each is dressed uniquely: One, with long deep green hair, is dressed in a regal suit, while the other, with her shorter gray hair, wears a simple dress that is sparsely decorated. Something else strikes you about them, and you have a feeling you know what it is.

"Those two were probably in love when they were five. They even became sisters together, although they're still kinda new - they've only been around for like, 20 years. They've definitely been working, though, as I'm sure you noticed from their clothing. The green-haired one is the current Arclady - she's head of the Arcs like me. The one in the dress is the Lily Apprentice - kinda on the low end of a royalty scale, but it's still an honor. Pretty good for only two decades."

She touches the screen and the picture changes. The gray-haired woman is holding a child that can't be more than a month old, while the green-haired one looks on, a boyish-looking girl of probably three hanging from her shoulders. All are smiling; even the infant is content.

"When people are in love long enough, they start considering having children. Since the method for two (or more) women to procreate is magical, pregnancy is completely planned, although the result isn't. These two had two children, each carrying surprising magical proficiency, just like their parents. If you didn't guess, the younger one is me."

Her breath catches, and you see her expression weaken slightly. You're sure you know where this is going, but you keep quiet.

"And the other... There was an accident. We were messing around with spells, but there was an interruption, a miscasting, an explosion... When the dust settled, her body was there, but the soul wasn't. She was empty. We started investigating, and they said her soul was still alive and well; they just didn't know where. They said her soul would probably make itself a new body, having been so magically tuned, and it would fabricate memories and a life that it could live on in. We started looking all over the world for her, and now-"

You cut her off. "I've heard enough." She stops, startled. The Arc looks a bit worried, but she remains silent.

"I've made my decision."

Do you believe her and accept the change, or do you still think you can escape?
