Chapter 5 by TheSpectator TheSpectator

Does she tell you more?

Yes.

"Yeah...sure." Miranda says to herself, breaking the silence. "Just let me think here for a moment. . . .Yeah, alright. . ."

"What is it?"

"I spent a lot of time alone when I first started to work here." She said, ignoring you. "I always told myself I was too busy to go with my co-workers whenever they'd make plans to do something after work. I suppose I was trying to convince myself I wasn't going to be here for too long, but I digress. One lonely night, while working a late shift, I noticed how creepy this old building actually is. As I came to this realization, I started to feel like I wasn't really alone. For some reason that guy that was watching me came to mind, so my skin started to crawl."

"When I was returning from my shift, I heard something strange behind one of the locked dorms. It wasn't the first time I heard something behind that door, but that night was truly bizarre. It was well past midnight. It sounded like something was rolling around - like a chair? Once I heard it, I couldn't get it out of my mind... I was awake for the whole night."

"That's not very physical, Miranda. That's more...supernatural."

"I'm not telling my story, damnit! This continued for the rest of the week. I finally got enough nerve to check it out one afternoon. I stole the room's key from the manager's office and I went to open the door, but it was still locked, somehow. I rattled the door and beat my body against it out of anger. Then, all the nerve I gathered was lost in an instant...I heard the locks on the other side coming apart. When it opened I felt like sprinting out, but I was too shocked to do anything." She swallowed and facepalmed. "On the other end was that man that was staring at me."

"He was just...chilling back there?"

Miranda shot her hand out, shouting almost. "I didn't know what he was doing back there!!"

"H-he just looked at me and smiled weirdly. He told me he was lost and was stuck in there. He was so pale I...I knew he wasn't able to do anything to me. I'll never forget his face when he looked at me. It was so inhuman. So...so wrong and violating. I hated that he never apologized or gave me any kind of insurance. I hate the fact he just walked down the hall and left like what he had just done was normal somehow. " Miranda became visibly upset.

"You don't have to say anymore," you told Miranda. "Sorry for reminding you of that."

She blinked a few times and muttered. "Whatever. It was forever ago now so it doesn't matter."

"Whatever you do...Don't tell Delilah or Maple or anyone else. They talk about having the sense of being watched sometimes. I don't want them to go out looking for trouble. I...honestly haven't seen that man since that last run-in. I have never felt so insecure and so close to danger ever again since that day I did that stupid fucking thing. I don't want any of the other girls or even any of the boys to stumble over anything like that, okay? Every so often we get some creeper that peeks through our dorm windows, and I'd rather have them believe it's something like that other than the latter."

You shift legs. "So that's that then? You don't want to me ask anyone else about the creepy or odd experiences they've had around here?"

"Yes," she says flatly. "I want you to pretend that everything is normal. Don't bring any attention to any of the bullshit around here. You're not a local. I'm not a local - don't fucking bring it up between any of them anymore. It'll stir one us to do something stupid because we're not from here."

Miranda sighs. "If any of the locals hear any of this from one of us personally, they'd probably do a full investigation. They're weird here. They're all superstitious. We...the other maids and I did that 'Bloody Marry' thing one night after the tavern closed early. We were all kinda drunk when this was suggested so it seemed like an innocent idea. We found a candle and did it the bathroom in the dorm area. One-by-one, we did it. Usually someone fake screamed and laughed at it, but nearing the end, before I could do it, someone finally saw her, I- I guess at least."

"She screamed so loudly that we sobered up and went to the door. The door wouldn't move an inch. She screamed, pounded, and shouted. When we finally got the door open she bolted into my arms and started crying. 'I saw her! I saw her!' is all she could manage. She was cut or anything, but that ended that night." She paused then continued. "Eventually, our manager found out about it and scolded us for doing it...Then our bathroom renovated - uh, new mirror and everything."

She ended with a sigh. "There's more examples too, but it's best not to linger on them for too long."

What do you do now?
