Chapter 4

Agree?
Yes
"Very well," Camilla finally said, "I will agree to this... wager."
Briana's smile grew almost radiant as she curtsied respectfully. "Thank you, Mother," she said, "this does make me feel more at ease about engaging this situation now that I know you'll be by my side."
"I have my own reasons for seeing how this goes," Camilla replied, "So this arrangement is not simply for your sake."
"Of course," Briana said, "Shall I take my leave then? It seems we will both have things to prepare in the next few days."
"Go," Camilla said, settling deeper in her throne in a way Briana recognized as when she was about to give some concentrated thought to a situation.
Briana gave another curtsy and turned to leave, the smile not leaving her face until she stepped out into the hall. Letting out a deep sigh once the door was closed behind her, she quickly headed down the hall, looking around cautiously as she walked towards the study. Normally, she would go there to relax with a book or to simply have a place where she was certain her more boisterous and adventurous sisters would not be.
Today, however, it would serve as a meeting place for step two of her plan.
Ever since she had learned of Eldon's rather unique custom, she had been preparing for the possibility that she might end up being the one chosen to undertake it. This included uncovering a trove of secret documents that her ancestors had taken down in case their relations with the Dragon took a turn. Within them she had discovered quite a wellspring of information that would be useful to her with the meeting she was about to have.
"I presume you were not followed," Briana said as sat down on a cushioned chair next to the tallest bookcase in the room, "Or else you would not be here right now."
"I was not, Princess," a speaker standing in the shadows on the other side of the bookcase said, stepping out into the light to reveal himself as the messenger that she had seen entering the castle to talk to her mother before she had been summoned in turn.
"Good," Briana said with a nod, "I presume you've brought what I asked of you, Rathal?"
Rathal nodded, reaching up to adjust the scarf that covered his face in a nervous gesture she had seen the previous times they had talked. He then reached into a worn leather pouch by his side and pulled out a small vial of clear liquid that he handed to the Princess.
Briana inspected the vial, the way its contents twinkled in the light and sloshed around as she lightly rocked the container back and forth showing it was thicker than water and most likely what she actually wanted. "While I certainly do not object to your aide," she said, "I must say, I'm a little surprised."
"Why is that?" Rathal asked, "You don't want to be his bride and we simply wish to ensure there are more Dragons of a stronger breed than what... HE could provide."
Briana could clearly hear the venom in Rathal's voice as he almost spit the word "he" instead of saying it. "If you feel his having off-spring would be such a bad thing," she answered, "I simply wonder why you allow him the chance of having children at all instead of just... removing him."
Rathal's eyes narrowed as he glared at Briana. "You are less ignorant of our ways than most Humans," he said, "but never suggest anything like that again."
The Princess chuckled, "I see. So ensuring a smaller brood is fair play but to deny entirely is a grievous sin."
The Dragon messenger nodded firmly, arms crossing his dull blue scaled chest, his eyes still narrowed at Briana, displaying his annoyance.
"Oh don't be like that," Briana said, "How are we silly, ignorant Humans supposed to learn if we don't ask questions like that sometimes?"
Rathal grunted in reply, looking away from the Princess in frustration as he grumbled, "... Do you require anything else for this scheme of yours or shall I take my leave?"
Briana raised an eyebrow, her smirk returning to her lips as she all but purred, "Why in such a rush? Have you forgotten I DID promise you a reward for your efforts?"
