Chapter 10
by throw_away_not_me
Does she free herself?
Yes
With a huge effort she jerked sideways and felt the man on top of her loose his balance and slide off as she struggled to her feet. Somebody made a grab for her and she pushed him back. From behind she felt her sweater being pulled, but she jerked out of his grip. The Hunter she'd shaken off his feet was getting up behind her, but was too far away to grab her still something made her pause. The man was clearly no amateur. His belt was loaded down with weapons, all apparently Hunt legal. His face was scared, from what exactly Jenny wasn't sure, but it didn't look pretty. Still there was something about the way he carried himself. Jenny shook herself. There was no time for that kind of thinking. Sticking to her originally plan she made another dash for the exit shoving shocked nobodies out of the way as she picked up speed.
From behind her a voice yelled, "Stop" it was the not so armature Hunter who'd held her down, but Jenny wasn't stopping for anyone, least of all him.
"Didn't won't to do it this way" he said as he pulled a bottle off his belt. Jenny heard as he shook it's contents and she certainly heard when he knocked the cap off. Immediately a loud hiss filled the space overwhelming for the moment the yells of the would be Hunters. Then the sound of the yelling started to taper off. Voices cut out mid yell and Jenny realized something was very wrong. Looking back she glimpsed a cloud of white mist billowing out of the bottle. Inside could just barely be glimpsed the bodies of the Hunters. Those not yet enveloped noticed what was happening about when Jenny did running in all available directions to avoid the onrushing clouds. They weren't making it. The mist seemed to seep through the air rather than with it, like water wicked into a rag it came on like a solid wall. In that instant Jenny knew she couldn't out run it. She'd make, maybe, to the top of the next flight and then she'd be gassed. Pressed up against the railing she realized she only had one way free. She glanced over the railing. The fall was only a story, she'd fallen out of trees that high. Long long ago, another part of her brain reminded her, when you also made a habit of climbing those same trees.
Does she take the leap?
