Chapter 2
by vertigo
Does Joyce agree to the terms?
Yes, with out actually reading the full email.
After closing the message Joyce noticed a second e-mail had appeared in her inbox which seemed to be an automated response to her reply to the first. It had merely informed her that her agreeing to the contract had been registered and she would receive lettered instructions soon on how to proceed. With this, she sighed once more and resided herself to her work.
An hour later a second letter arrived. This time delivered by courier with a thicker A4 sized envelope attached by tape. This time Joyce took the initiative and made a point to ask who the sender was. The delivery man ignored her question with the simple and very rude reply that his job was only too deliver the mail. Joyce let him go without another word, not seeing the need to fuss over the issue.
Her attention was now fully on this new envelope; picking it up from her desk and immediately opening it. The envelope contained a single piece of paper which read; WE WILL CONTACT YOU BY PHONE IN FIVE MINUTES. YOU MUST FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTION OR FACE DISCIPLINARY ACTION AS PER THE AGREED TERMS OF SERVICE!
This lasts letter scared Joyce. Was she in trouble? The whole thing made no sense to her. What exactly did she agree to? She reloaded the email to take a closer look at the agreement. It had not helped in the slightest, though it did mention that by agreeing she was now legally bound to carry out all tasks assigned to her or be subjected to reprimand. Joyce thought this was a bit of a hard line to take for a pay raise.
Before she could gauge the situation further her phone rang on cue. She picked up and said “Hello,” in as much of a controlled, professional manner as she could pull off. A woman's voice replied in a stern, cold tone. “Report to the office in room five and await further instructions.” The phone immediately cut off as the woman had hung up before Joyce could respond.
Not wanting to risk her job over something silly she got up from her desk and did as she was told. Joyce quickly made her way out of her office and down the hall to the fifth room. Room Five was used for group events like staff meetings and presentations. As she opened the door Joyce could see the large length of the table that filled the room. A mobile phone lay at the opposite end of the table next to an overviewing window that looked out to the adjacent buildings.
Does Joyce go into the room?
