Chapter 38 by brevdravis brevdravis

Has Kaila Come Back?

Yes, with a sour expression. (The End) (VERY Bad End)

"So... " Kaila remarked, shutting the door behind her. "I totally read that wrong."

"Huh...?" I mumbled from my position in the bed, shucking a cover out of the way as I looked at her.

"I... I chickened out." Kaila groaned. "Helen said that if we were going to do that, she was just gonna go sleep with you, and... I'm not taking a chance on the two of you alone again."

"She said she wasn't going to fuck me..."

"She brought it up, Brent. That means it was on her mind. I... we're not solid enough right now for you to be spending intimate time with another woman." Kaila sighed.

"I love you, Kaila..." I began, bringing myself to my elbows. "If you want, I can go sleep in the tub or something."

"No honey, it's not that... I... I realized I didn't really want her. I was a little carried away, and you were ok with it, but when I got there..." Kaila shrugged, dropping her bathrobe to the floor and sliding into the bed in the dark. Her body curled up behind me in the dark and she laid her head on the pillow. "I realized it wasn't about her... I mean, if it had been another guy would you have been ok with it?"

"With us trying for a baby? Hell no." I replied sharply. "Nothing personal darling, but I'm not raising and paying for some random stranger's kid."

"What if that wasn't an issue?" Kaila asked a bit quieter. "What if I told you there was no way that the guy could get me pregnant?"

"Are you asking to cheat on me? Look Kaila, I was fine with another woman, but you're asking now for..."

"See, that's why I won't let you sleep with Helen. You're a hypocrite." Her voice became a bit sharper. "I'm trying to tell you I'm pregnant, and you're being an idiot."

Kaila pushed back from me and flopped over, turning so that her back was to me. She took a good deal of the covers as well, and I had to muscle back a bit of them for warmth.

We lay there quietly, and the fact that she was pregnant didn't seem to make either of us feel good. All I could wonder now was about that executive that she had brought up. She said she hadn't slept with him, but she also hadn't told me she was pregnant for a reason. She had pointed it out, after all. Women don't bring up things without a reason. There was a reason she wanted me thinking about her cheating with another man.

The thought was not pleasant at all, and a roil formed in my stomach as I wondered if she was even carrying my baby. She had never told me about the guy, after all, and had come home smelling of Listerine. That didn't quite add up to her story. She had been with her sister, after all, and the two of them played twin games far too often.

Kaila shifted behind me, and a soft sound of breathing issued from her nose as she did.

I bit the inside of my cheek, hearing no noises save for the falling sound of the rain. This didn't feel right. Not at all. It was bothering me. I made a mental note that I would be along on the next doctors appointment for Kaila. If they wouldn't let me go, I would know for certain.

I tried to remember if I knew the number for a divorce attorney.
