Work on the First Seminar Paper

You return to the hall lounge and bust out your laptop, ready to have a productive hour or two working on your seminar paper. Out of the corner of your eye, you spot Annalise half-watching some television show, half-scrolling through her phone. You pay no further attention to her, choosing instead to pop up to your room to grab a few books, and you’re back in the lounge a minute later, riffling through the pages of your reading assignment, searching for evidence that you could use for your burgeoning paper.

You need to show that love and sex are incompatible. But why? Your mind is filled with images of all the girls that you’d like to get with. Love and sex are incompatible. You repeat the phrase under your breath, quickly glancing around to make sure that nobody’s there to judge you insane, and then you repeat it a couple more times for good measure.

You repeat the mantra over and over, vainly hoping that it will conjure up a real argument on your laptop screen. No such thing happens.

“You okay there, Knight?”

Annalise’s voice startles you out of your headspace, and you hurriedly seal your mouth, looking at her.

“Is that a beer in your hand?” you ask, suddenly.

“Are you trying to distract me from… whatever it is you were just doing?” she asks, waving in your general direction. “Were you trying to summon a sex demon? I definitely heard the word sex there a couple times…”

“I was just brainstorming ideas for the seminar assignment,” you say. “You want to take a look?”

She leans in a bit closer, stares at the bolded sentence at the top of your word doc: Love and sex are incompatible and then she scans the beginnings of the outline that you have underneath it.

“Neat stuff,” she says with an approving smile. She takes another chug of her beer and then prances away. “Catch you later, Knight!”

You stare at her ass as she heads down the corridor, and then, as soon as she turn the corner, you crack open the first of your many books. You’ve got your work cut out for you.
