Chapter 24

Work again
Dan got through his workday on Sunday without incident. He pushed freight in Toys instead of Chemicals. While the change of product was nice, the children using the isles as a playground was not. Most parents, leaving their crotch-goblins to pillage and plunder the section, looked that their phone and would occasionally glance up to make sure their child hadn't completely destroyed whatever they got their hands on.
Todd, in his typical useless way, managed to piss off three employees and two customers before Dan left for the day. "How is he still employed here?" Fred muttered as he walked with Dan out to the parking lot.
"I have no idea. The rumor was Heather put in a good word for him. It might be that's biting her in the ass now," Dan mused.
"Eh, he'll get replaced soon. Seen it before. They're setting him up for failure, and he's happily walking off the plank with a rope around his neck."
"We'll see," Dan laughed. "Anyway, headed out. Have a good one."
"You too, see you tomorrow, if you're working."
"I am, sadly. I need the money, but don't want to come."
"You'll feel that way for another forty to fifty years. Enjoy!"
"Oh, joy," Dan muttered as he got in his car.
The drive back was fast, being a Sunday, and most people were either parked in a shopping center somewhere or at home. A redheaded woman, short and athletic, nodded to him from behind huge sunglasses that covered most of her face. She bent over to reach something in the back seat of her silver two-door sports car. Dan raised an eyebrow at her muscular butt and appreciated the view her yoga pants provided.
"Hey, I'm home," he called as he walked in the front door.
"Hey dear, look what I found for a little over twenty!" Laura called as she appeared in the bathroom doorway. In the middle of the room were two stools, a battered-looking folding table, a lamp, and a black radio. "I saw a garage sale on a sign. Oh! I have better news! I got that job with the clinic. Tony said he'd try and get me as many hours as I needed. Yevette, the other receptionist, is going out on maternity leave soon. She's about to pop," she declared with a bright smile.
"Wonderful!" Dan exclaimed. If his mother could bring in a little money too, their situation might not be as dire as he'd worried.
"It is. I'll work from noon to eight. I have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Tony said they don't have too many people come in on those days. Mostly the weekends will be the busiest days."
"Hey, anything that will help is more than welcome."
