Chapter 77

What happens then?
Wine and Chocolates with Helen
The knock on the door comes only moments after you’ve finished tidying everything up and put on a fresh shirt. You pull it open, to reveal Helen, dressed in her finest, a lovely soft yellow gown that wouldn’t look out of place at a swanky Hamptons soiree.
“Lovely to see you, my dear Alex,” she says, curtsying slightly. “It’s been quite the day, and I have been looking forward to the wine and chocolates for a good many hours now.” She winks at your shocked expression, and drops the haughty facade, almost stumbling into the room over her heels. You catch her, and she rests there for a moment, head against your shoulders, before she rights herself.
“Hmm… should I lay off the wine? Nahh,” she says, looking around the room. “And I see you’ve busted out the good stuff for me! I like your taste.”
Thank God Emma knows her stuff, you think to yourself, shutting the door. “Oh, it’s nothing,” you say. “Want a glass?”
“If it wouldn’t bother the sir too much,” she responds, taking a seat on your bed. You sit on the chair by your desk, turning it to face her. You open up the bottle and pour a glass for her, the dark liquid tumbling out in a hearty stream before you twist it off. She picks it up, swirling it around, and breathes in.
“This one is promising,” she says. She’s about to take a sip, when she catches herself, eyeing the box of chocolates instead. “But I’ll wait for the main course before consuming.”
You open up the box and pass it over to her. She carefully selects one and nibbles on it, closing her eyes.
“Delicious, simply sublime,” she says, putting on airs again.
“Just the right bitter notes,” you concur, biting into your own piece.
“And the wine… the citrus is zesty, it really balances out the palate.”
“Agreed, that is some firm structure. I have to say, it really is a powerhouse… kind of like my mitochondria.”
Helen almost sprays the wine out of her mouth at the comment, and she sets down the glass. “Fuck you,” she laughs, “that was so weak.”
“No, it was powerful,” you insist. “Kind of like my mitochondria.”
“Goddamnit,” she says, the corners of her eyes creasing in amusement. She finishes off the rest of another chocolate, licking her fingers afterwards. She does it slowly, sucking off the remainder of the sweet with an erotic air. You watch her as she does so, and she meets your eye, fully aware of what she’s doing. You’re tempted to say something, but the moment passes, and she hops off the bed, looking around your room.
A moment passes, and when it becomes clear that she’s not going to say anything, you do. “How’s the decor? Up to your standards?”
“You’re missing the chandelier, aren’t you,” she says, looking up at the plain ceiling.
“It’s a fire hazard,” you explain, and you go for an opening. “It’s getting mighty hot in here, isn’t it?”
“A little,” she says, toying with the sleeves of her dress. You wonder for a moment if she’s going to lift it off, but she stops, and she sighs. “Sorry, I can’t do this right now.”
“That’s alright, there was no—”
“No, it’s just been… a rough day for me. Some family stuff going on that I’d rather not talk about, and I was really looking forward to this, but… not today.”
“I get it,” you say, because you do, on some level, even if you are disappointed in this outcome. You top off her wine again, and she gives you a grateful look.
“So, uh… tell me more about this hospital thing you just went through. Tell me all the gory details. Are you going to be dead by the end of the week? Who should I invite to the funeral?”
You chuckle, and tell her a little more about all that’s transpired—leaving out the bits about how hot you think Janet is, of course. The conversation flows freely from there, and before you know it, nearly two hours have passed, and Helen bids you farewell.
The scent of her perfume lingers in the air after she leaves, and you shut your eyes, relaxing for a moment, before the rumbling of your stomach takes you back to the present. Shit, you’re hungry, and you need to get food in your system.
Helen +15
