Chapter 3
by Quiet_Cool
Where is he headed?
Why not breakfast?
His stomach rumbled as he opened the door to his car. He went a little fancy with this one, choosing a Porsche, though a less expensive model.
He started it up and headed down to town. His house, fair-sized and nice, sat on the hilltop above Divine (a name voted on by the town's residents). As he drove into town, he noticed the regulars, women shopping and men walking thier dogs. Some people were working, but no one was really doing anything important. In the Mainframe, work was merely to keep busy. The system kept things in order without any help. Of those who chose to work, and John was one of them, none chose to be streetsweepers or janitors, jobs that were essential in the real world.
He pulled into the parking lot for the small diner he often came to for breakfast and turned off the ignition. As he got out, he was passed by several girls, almost flawless, carrying shopping bags. Their faces were bored, as many were. In the outside world, he'd heard, work was a primary function that affected every part of life. Stature, monetary security, having things you wanted, these were all related to work. Here, in the Mainframe, those things were trivial. You requested things from the system and you recieved them. Life was about pleasure and fun, relaxation. And that was all anyone knew. But those things didn't last forever. And when they were no longer luxuries, they weren't a fun as they should be. Shopping meant nothing when you always had money enough to do so, so it became fairly boring, even to those who greatly enjoyed it.
Even the good life grew old, he guessed.
He headed inside, choosing a table in the corner and eyeing through the menu. As he perused the items there, deciding between an omlet and a bacon and eggs platter, the waitress came to his side and tapped him on the shoulder, grinning widely.
"Hey, John, how've you been?" The smiling brunette asked.
"Hey, Stacey," he replied, smiling back. He'd known Stacey for some time, had actually known her longer than he'd known Andrea, though thier association had been limited to time here in the diner. "I've been good, and you?"
She shrugged. "Kinda' bored lately. What'll you have?"
"I think the egg and bacon platter," he replied, handing her the menu.
"Milk with that?"
He nodded, smiling again. The diner was almost empty this morning, so he made the polite gesture. "You want to sit while it cooks? If you're not too busy that is?"
What does she reply?
